The top-ranked, 4-0 Alabama Crimson Tide of coach Nick Saban welcomed the 7th ranked, 4-0 Florida Gators of coach Urban Meyer. Alabama's defense forced 4 turnovers & held the Gators to just 79 yards rushing on their way to an easy 31-6 win to retain The Belt. The Crimson Tide completely shutdown the Florida offense while the Alabama offense methodically drove for scores time after time. Crimson Tide PK Jeremy Shelley kicked a 28-yard field goal following Alabama's opening drive. The Gators responded with a 12-play, 74-yard drive to the Crimson Tide's 2-yard line before Florida RB Trey Burton tried an option pass which was intercepted by Alabama LB Nico Johnson at the goal-line ending the threat. The Crimson Tide turned the interception into a 9-play, 80-yard drive with RB Mark Ingram scoring on a 6-yard run for a 10-0 lead. Ingram capped the next drive with a 1-yard touchdown run for a 17-0 Crimson Tide lead. When Gators' QB John Brantley threw an interception to Crimson Tide CB Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama struck with a 19-yard touchdown pass from McElroy to WR Marquis Maze for a 24-0 lead. Florida PK Chas Henry kicked a 39-yard field goal for just before halftime to at least give the Gators some hope & when he kicked a 21-yard field goal to open the 2nd half, it seemed Florida might have some life. When the Gators defense forced a quick punt on the Crimson Tide's next drive, Brantley went back to work but the hope ended when his pass was intercepted by Alabama LB C.J. Mosley who returned it 35 yards for a score giving the Crimson Tide a 31-6 lead. The rest of the game saw Alabama continue to pound the running game to effectively run out the clock. McElroy finished with just 84 yards passing but no turnovers while Brantley threw for 202 yards with 2 interceptions in the loss. The Gators finished the season 8-5 while Alabama finished 10-3, ranked 10th nationally. Florida has not played for The Belt again.
