The top-ranked, 6-0 Florida Gators of coach Urban Meyer traveled to Starkville to meet the 3-4 Mississippi State Bulldogs coached by former Florida offensive coordinator Dan Mullen. The Gators overcame another erratic offensive performance including 2 interceptions that Bulldogs' S Johnthan Banks returned for touchdowns as Florida retained The Belt with a 29-19 win. The Gators' defense continued to perform at a high level holding Mississippi State's offense to 237 total yards. Florida's LB A.J. Jones interecepted Bulldogs' QB Tyson Lee on the opening drive at the Mississippi State 46-yard line. After driving to the Bulldogs' 20-yard line, Gators' PK Caleb Sturgis missed a 37-yard field goal attempt. Mississippi State followed with a 10-play, 54-yard drive that resulted in a 43-yard field goal from PK Derek DePasquale giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Florida's All-SEC QB Tim Tebow dominated the next drive accounting for 48 yards of the drive's 68 yards with his running & passing. When the Gators reached the Mississippi State 1-yard, Tebow was tackled for a 3-yard loss by Bulldogs' DE Sean Ferguson forcing a field goal attempt. This time Sturgis successfully kicked a 21-yard field goal that tied the game at 3-3. Tebow dominated the next Florida drive as well including his 26-yard touchdown run to give the Gators a 10-3 advantage. Florida added another 21-yard field goal from Sturgis midway through the 2nd quarter pushing the lead to 13-3 & it seemed that neither team would score again before the intermission but with 1:00 minute left in the half, the Gators got another chance. Florida's RB Chris Rainey blocked the punt of Mississippi State's P Heath Hutchins & Gators' DE William Green recovered at the Bulldogs' 7-yard line. On 3rd down from the 8-yard line, Tebow threw a pass that Banks intercepted at the goal-line & returned 100 yards sending the teams to their locker rooms with Florida leading 13-10. The Bulldogs tied the game on their opening possession of the 2nd half when DePasquale kicked a 31-yard field goal. The highlight of the scoring drive was a 54-yard completion from Lee to RB Christian Ducre to the Gators' 25-yard line. Tebow accounted for every yard with his running & passing on Florida's 48-yard drive that ended with a 27-yard field goal by Sturgis giving the Gators a 16-13 lead entering the final quarter. Early in the 4th quarter, Mississippi State decided to go for a 4th down & 2 from their own 26-yard line. The play failed & momentum shifted to Florida. It took 6 plays to drive the 22 yards before Rainey carried the final 8 yards for the touchdown. When Sturgis missed the extra point attempt, the Gators lead was 22-13. Things got worst for the Bulldogs on their next drive as Florida's LB Dustin Doe intercepted Lee & returned it 23 yards for a touchdown pushing the lead to 29-19 with 8:25 to play. The final points came with 3:51 to play as Tebow was rushed by Mississippi State's DE Pernell McPhee & his pass was intercepted by Banks who returned it 20 yards for his second touchdown of the game. Tebow finished with 127 yards passing with 2 interceptions while Lee threw for 145 yards with 3 interceptions. Florida finished the season 13-1, ranked 3rd nationally while the Bulldogs finished 5-7. Mississippi State has not played for The Belt again.
