The 2nd ranked, 10-0 Texas Tech Red Raiders of coach Mike Leach traveled to Norman to meet the 5th ranked, 9-1 Oklahoma Sooners of coach Bob Stoops. The teams had met one other time in a Belt game with Oklahoma claiming the title from the Red Raiders in 1992. The Sooners rolled to a 35-point 2nd quarter on their way to a 65-21 win over the previous champions to claim The Belt for the second time in their history. Oklahoma's offense amassed 625 total yards as Heisman Trophy winning, All-American QB Sam Bradford threw 4 touchdown passes. The Texas Tech offense had little problems moving the ball but the could not keep up with the high-powered Sooners. After the Oklahoma defense forced a punt, the Sooners' offense covered 73 yards in 10 plays primarily focusing on the running of All-Big XII RB DeMarco Murray. Murray gained 48 yards on the drive including a 1-yard touchdown run to put Oklahoma ahead 7-0. Late in the opening quarter, Oklahoma drove 76 yard in 6 plays highlighted by a 42-yard pass from Bradford to All-Big XII TE Jermaine Gresham. Sooners' RB Chris Brown carried in from 3 yards early in the 2nd quarter for a 14-0 Oklahoma lead. Red Raiders' QB Graham Harrell effectively passed Texas Tech into scoring position but the Red Raiders were unable to complete the critical pass to keep the game close. The lead was pushed to 21-0 when Bradford connected with Gresham on a 19-yard touchdown pass & Bradford 28-yard touchdown pass to WR Juaquin Iglesias made the score Oklahoma 28 Texas Tech 0. Harrell got the Red Raiders on the board on their next drive as he completed a 34-yard pass to WR Eric Morris before throwing a 25-yard touchdown pass to WR Tramain Swindall but the Sooners went back to their ground attack as RB Chris Brown finished a 12-play, 80-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run for a 35-7 Oklahoma lead. The final points of the 1st half came on after Sooners' LB Travis Lewis intercepted Harrell returning it to the Texas Tech 1-yard line. Murray covered the final yard for a 42-7 halftime lead. In the 3rd quarter, Oklahoma got a 33-yard field goal from PK Jimmy Stevens, a 2-yard touchdown run from Brown, & 66-yard touchdown pass from Bradford to WR Manuel Johnson. The Red Raiders could only come up with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Harrell to Morris. With the game long decided, both teams added one more score. Bradford threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to WR Ryan Broyles while Harrell threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to WR Detron Lewis for the final points. Bradford finished with 304 yards passing with his 4 scores while Murray added 125 yards rushing to 2 touchdowns & Brown rushed for 108 yards with his 3 scores.
