The 3rd ranked, 5-0 Missouri Tigers of coach Gary Pinkel welcomed the 17th ranked, 5-0 Oklahoma State Cowboys with coach Mike Gundy. Cowboys' QB Zac Robinson threw 2 touchdown passes, All-Big XII RB Kendall Hunter rushed for 154 yards, & Tigers' QB Chase Daniel was intercepted 3 times as Oklahoma State claimed their first Belt reign with a 28-23 upset of Missouri. The game matched the 2nd & 3rd highest score teams in the NCAA this season but things should have seemed ominous from the outset for the Tigers as the had to settle for an 18-yard field goal on their opening drive. It marked the first time this season that Missouri did not score a touchdown on their first possession of a game. The Cowboys responded with a methodical 13-play, 71-yard drive capped by Robinson's 6-yard touchdown run. Midway through the 2nd quarter, Oklahoma State tried some trickery but their plan backfired. Cowboys' P Matt Fodge tried a fake punt but needing 17 yards for the 1st down, Fodge was knocked out-of-bounds 5 yards short of the marker. The Tigers took possession at the Oklahoma State 36-yard line & 5 plays later Missouri's RB Derrick Washington scored on a 5-yard run giving the Tigers a 10-7 edge. Missouri had 2 other chances to score in the quarter but All-Big XII PK Jeff Wolfert had a 34-yard field goal attempt blocked & his 52-yard field goal attempt as time expired in the half fell short. The Cowboys opened the 2nd half with a Hunter scoring on the second play of the half. Hunter took an option pitch from Robinson & broke down the right sideline for a 68-yard touchdown run that put Oklahoma State ahead 14-10. The Tigers regained the lead late in the 3rd quarter as Daniel completed all 8 of his pass attempts in the 11-play, 95-yard drive before RB Jimmy Jackson carried in from a yard out putting Missouri ahead 17-14. The Cowboys were back in front just 4 plays later as Robinson connected on a 40-yard touchdown pass with WR Damian Davis. Early in the final quarter, as the Tigers drove for another score, Daniel was intercepted by LB Andre Sexton who returned the ball 39 yards. Robinson connected with Davis again, this time from 31 yards, as Oklahoma State took an 11-point lead at 28-17. Missouri got a 7-yard touchdown pass from Daniel to WR Danario Alexander but the failed 2-point conversion attempt left the Tigers trailing 28-23 with 4:27 left in the game. The Cowboys held the ball until there was 2:40 left in the game but with that much time left & 65 yards to go for the go-ahead score, Daniel strolled confidently into the huddle. Daniel found WR Earl Goldsmith for a 9-yard gain & the Tigers got 15 more yards when Oklahoma State's DE Jeremiah Price was called for a roughing-the-passer penalty. Daniel hit WR Jared Perry for a 4-yard gain but with 1:41 left & the ball at the Cowboys' 37-yard line, Daniel threw his 3rd interception of the game. Oklahoma State's LB Patrick Levine made the pick & the Cowboys were able to run out the clock. Robinson finished with 215 yards passing with 2 touchdowns as well as an interception while Hunter's 154 yards rushing included the 68-yard touchdown run. Daniel threw for 390 yards with a touchdown but 3 interceptions, WR Jeremy Maclin had 8 catches for 120 yards, & TE Chase Coffman added 11 catches for 104 yards in the loss. Oklahoma State finished the season 9-4, ranked 16th nationally while the Tigers finished 10-4, ranked 19th nationally. Missouri has not played for The Belt again.
