The top-ranked, 9-1 Louisiana State Tigers of coach Les Miles traveled to Oxford to meet the 3-7 Mississippi Rebels of coach Ed Orgeron. This was the Rebels second chance of the season to claim the title as they lost to Florida earlier. Four turnovers ended any hopes Mississippi had of an upset in spite of out-gaining the Tigers 466-396 as Louisiana State retained The Belt with a 41-24 win. After forcing Mississippi to punt, the Tigers scored on an impressive 98-yard drive capped by QB Matt Flynn's 5-yard touchdown run around right end. The Rebels tied the game at 7-7 late in the 1st quarter when WR Marshay Green returned a punt 44 yards for a touchdown. The tie lasted 14 seconds as Louisiana State's RB Trindon Holliday returned the ensuing kick-off 98 yards for a touchdown. Neither team scored in the 2nd quarter but it was Mississippi who missed the best opportunity. The Rebels went to back-up QB Brent Schaeffer at the start of the quarter & on his second drive, he had the Rebels driving to the Tigers' 8-yard line as time was running down. When the Rebels were called for a delay-of-game penalty, starting QB Seth Adams returned to the huddle. Adams' second pass of the drive was intercepted by Louisiana State's All-American S Craig Steltz ending the scoring threat & starting the second guessing of Orgeron's strategy of changing signal-callers. The Tigers opened the second half with a 10-play, 54-yard scoring drive with RB Keiland Williams scoring on a 10-yard run as Louisiana State pushed the lead to 21-7. Mississippi's PK Joshua Shene kicked a 23-yard field goal but Tigers' All-SEC PK Colt David matched that score with a 48-yard kick as the teams entered the 4th quarter with Louisiana State leading 24-10. David's 43-yard field goal made gave the Tigers a 27-10 lead with 11:36 to play before Schaeffer tried to rally the Rebels. The highlight of Mississippi's 7-play, 70-yard scoring drive was Schaeffer's 38-yard touchdown run that got the Rebels within 10 points at 27-17. After forcing Louisiana State to punt, Schaeffer had Mississippi moving again but Steltz made his second interception of the game. Steltz returned the pick 42 yards to the Rebels' 35-yard line & an illegal block penalty against Mississippi moved the ball to the Rebels' 20-yard line. Four plays later, Tigers' RB Jacob Hester scored from 2 yards out as Louisiana State extended the lead to 34-17. Schaeffer's next drive was more successful as he completed 3 of 4 pass attempts on the 68-yard drive with the touchdown coming on a 33-yard pass to WR Shay Hodge. The Tigers recovered the onside kick then put the game out of reach as RB Charles Scott finished a 2-play drive with a 29-yard touchdown run. Flynn finished with 168 yards passing while Schaeffer threw for 208 yards with a touchdown but 2 interceptions. Mississippi finished 3-9 in Orgeron's final season while Louisiana State finished the season 12-2 & National Champions. Mississippi has not played for The Belt again.
