The 3-4 Washington State Cougars of coach Bill Doba came to Los Angeles to meet the top-ranked, 7-0 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Pete Carroll. The Trojans scored 28 points in the 1st quarter & added 745 yards of total offense on their way to a 55-13 victory. The Cougars were held to 89 yards passing, 2 of 13 third down conversions, & 23:24 of possession time in the loss. Southern Cal's All-Pac 10 QB Matt Leinart threw for 364 yards with 3 touchdowns & RB LenDale White rushed for 155 yards with 2 touchdowns to lead the Trojans. Southern Cal opened the scoring on their first drive going 74 yards in 7 plays with Leinhart hitting All-American WR Dwayne Jarrett on a 29-yard touchdown pass. Washington State's All-American RB Jerome Harrison scored on a 13-yard touchdown run for the Cougars but the 7-6 score was as close as Washington State got the rest of the game. Southern Cal's OT Winston Justice recovered a fumble by All-American RB Reggie Bush in the end zone, Leinart hit WR Steve Smith on a 15-yard touchdown pass, & on a 24-yard touchdown pass as the Trojans pushed the lead to 28-6 at the end of the 1st quarter. White’s 2-yard touchdown & PK Mario Danelo’s 27-yard field goal gave Southern Cal a 38-6 halftime lead. Danelo hit on a 22-yard field goal for the only points of the 3rd quarter & White’s 21-yard touchdown run gave the Trojans a 48-6 lead with 12:40 to play. Washington State finally scored again after recovering a fumble by Southern Cal's QB John David Booty at the Southern Cal 16-yard line. Cougars' RB DeMaundray Woolridge scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. The final points came on a 6-yard touchdown run by the Trojans’ RB Michael Coleman. Jarrett finished with 11 catches for 200 yards with his touchdown for the Trojans while Harrison had 147 yards rushing with his touchdown for the Cougars. Southern Cal finished the season 0-1 which includes 12 wins vacated as a result of Bush being declared ineligible by the NCAA; Pac 10 Champions & ranked 2nd nationally while the Cougars finished 4-7. Washington State has not played for The Belt again.
