The 4-3 Stanford Cardinal of first-year coach Walt Harris met the top-ranked, 8-0 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Pete Carroll in Los Angeles. The Trojans outscored the Cardinal 24-0 in the 1st quarter & the defense forced 5 turnovers on their way to a 51-21 Southern Cal victory. Trojans' All-American RB Reggie Bush rushed for 113 yards with a touchdown & All-American WR Dwayne Jarrett caught 8 passes for 101 yards with a touchdown to lead an offense that amassed 529 total yards. Southern Cal wasted no time in taking control of the game as they went 80 yards in 9 plays on their first drive with RB LenDale White scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run. The Cardinal’s first drive was not as successful as QB Trent Edwards fumbled on their second play from scrimmage. Trojans' DE Lawrence Jackson recovered the fumble at the Stanford 42-yard line & on the next snap, Bush took the handoff into the end zone for a 14-0 Southern Cal lead. Another 3 & out for the Southern Cal defense gave the ball back to Bush & company. This time All-Pac 10 QB Matt Leinart led the 8-play, 74-yard drive& hit White on a 16-yard touchdown pass. The score was already 21-0 & Stanford had only run 5 plays from scrimmage. Trojans' PK Mario Danelo’s 21-yard field goal completed the scoring in the 1st quarter but Southern Cal had more in store for the Cardinal in the 2nd quarter. Leinart hit Jarrett on a 19-yard touchdown pass & TE Fred Davis on a 19-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 37-0. Stanford finally got on the board when Edwards connected with WR Justin McCullum on a 14-yard touchdown pass midway through the 2nd quarter but Southern Cal came right back with a 9-play, 85-yard drive capped by Leinart’s 1-yard touchdown pass to TE Jimmy Miller for a 44-7 Trojan lead at halftime. The only points of the 3rd quarter came on a 1-yard touchdown run by Stanford's RB Jason Evans but with the score 44-14 starting the 4th quarter the game had long since been decided. Southern Cal's RB Brandon Hancock scored the final Trojans' touchdown on an 8-yard run & Stanford’s final score came on a 1-yard touchdown run by RB Gerald Commissiong. Leinart finished with 22 completions in 28 attempts for 259 yards passing with 4 touchdowns while Edwards threw for 245 yards with a touchdown but 3 interceptions for Stanford. McCullum did have 9 catches for 138 yards with his touchdown in the losing effort. Southern Cal finished the season 0-1 which includes 12 wins vacated as a result of Bush being declared ineligible by the NCAA; Pac 10 Champions & ranked 2nd nationally while the Cardinal finished 5-6. Stanford has not played for The Belt again.
