The top-ranked, 6-0 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Pete Carroll traveled to Seattle to meet the 1-5 Washington Huskies of first-year coach Ty Willingham. Washington has the record for most Belt reigns at 9 each but this Husky team was not as talented as the Belt holders of their past. Southern Cal's All-Pac 10 QB Matt Leinart threw 4 touchdown passes, All-American WR Dwayne Jarrett caught 3 of those scores & the defense held Washington to just 59 yards rushing in a 51-24 Trojan victory. Things might have been different for the Huskies but after a 92-yard kick-off return by WR Marlon Wood to the Southern Cal 8-yard line, Washington had to settle for a 23-yard field goal by PK Evan Knudson. The Trojans responded with a 12-play, 85-yard scoring drive with Leinart hitting WR Steve Smith on an 8-yard touchdown pass for a 7-3 Southern Cal lead. The Huskies came right back with a 12-play, 80-yard drive of their own with QB Isaiah Stanback connecting with WR Craig Chambers on an 8-yard touchdown pass. Trojans' All-Pac 10 S Darnell Bing returned the ensuing kick-off 68 yards to the Washington 24-yard line & 2 plays later, Leinart hit Jarrett for a 24-yard touchdown for a 14-10 Southern Cal lead at the start of the 2nd quarter. Trojans' CB Justin Wyatt recovered a Stanback fumble at the Washington 30-yard line before Leinart hit Jarrett for 24 yards & then All-American RB Reggie Bush scored on a 6-yard touchdown run for a 20-10 Southern Cal edge. After the next Huskies' drive stalled, Bush returned the punt 84 yards for a touchdown & 27-10 Trojans' lead. Southern Cal's All-Pac 10 DE Frostee Rucker recovered another Stanback fumble at the Washington 20-yard line & five plays later, Leinart hit Jarrett on a 7-yard touchdown pass for a 34-10 lead. The Huskies held on to the ball long enough to put together a 13-play, 80-yard drive with Stanback scoring on a 1-yard keeper for a 34-17 Southern Cal advantage. A 30-yard field goal by Trojans' PK Mario Danelo as time expired in the 1st half gave Southern Cal a 37-17 edge as the teams went to the locker rooms. Leinart & Jarrett accounted for the only points of the 3rd quarter when they hit on a 7-yard touchdown pass for a 44-17 lead. Washington got their final score when S Dashon Goldson intercepted Southern Cal's QB John David Booty & returned it 76 yards for a touchdown leaving the Trojans with a 44-24 lead. After Southern Cal recovered the Washington on-side kick, Booty rallied to lead a 5-play, 42-yard drive connecting with WR Patrick Turner for a 31-yard touchdown pass to close out the scoring. Leinart finished with 201 yards passing with his 4 touchdowns while Stanback threw for 201 yards with a touchdown but was sacked 4 times & fumbled twice for Washington. Southern Cal finished the season 0-1 which includes 12 wins vacated as a result of Bush being declared ineligible by the NCAA; Pac 10 Champions & ranked 2nd nationally while the Huskies finished 2-9. Washington has not played for The Belt again.
