The 6-3 California Golden Bears of coach Jeff Tedford welcomed the top-ranked, 9-0 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Pete Carroll to Berkeley. This was the site of the last loss for the Trojans when they were defeated 34-31 in 2003. Since then, Southern Cal had won 31 consecutive games & successfully defended The Belt for 22 of those games. While the Southern Cal offense scored more than enough points, it was the Trojans’ defense that stood out in this game. Six turnovers & 1 of 8 on third down conversions for the Golden Bears kept this game from being competitive in a 35-10 Southern Cal victory. Southern Cal opened the scoring after All-Pac 10 S Darnell Bing intercepted a pass by California's QB Joe Ayoob at the Cal 47-yard line. Trojans' All-Pac 10 QB Matt Leinart completed his first 7 passes to take the Trojans to the Cal 2-yard line & 2 plays later, RB LenDale White scored on a 1-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Southern Cal lead. The Golden Bears responded with a 45-yard field goal by PK Tom Schneider making the score 7-3 but that was as close as Cal got the rest of the game. Early in the 2nd quarter, Leinart led an 11-play, 70-yard drive & capped it with a 6-yard touchdown run himself for a 14-3 Southern Cal edge. Late in the quarter with Southern Cal starting a drive at their own 32-yard line, Leinart completed passes of 16 yards to TE Fred Davis, & 2 passes to All-American WR Dwayne Jarrett, the first for 44 yards with the second for 5 yard to put the ball at the Cal 3-yard line. Leinart then scored his second touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run for a 21-3 Trojans' lead as the teams went to intermission. The 3rd quarter opened in typical fashion for Southern Cal with a long scoring drive. The 7-play, 80-yard drive was highlighted by Leinart’s 49-yard pass to White before he scored on a 6-yard touchdown run for a 28-3 advantage. The Trojans’ final scoring drive came after S Ryan Ting intercepted Ayoob & Southern Cal had the ball at their own 3-yard line. White capped the 13-play, 97-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run for his third score of the game. California's RB Chris Manderino scored on a 1-yard touchdown late in the game for the final tally. Leinart finished with 246 yards passing to go with his 2 rushing touchdowns while Ayoob was held to 98 yards passing with 4 interceptions & a sack. Southern Cal finished the season 0-1 which includes 12 wins vacated as a result of All-American RB Reggie Bush being declared ineligible by the NCAA; Pac 10 Champions & ranked 2nd nationally while the Golden Bears finished 8-4 & ranked 25th nationally. California has not played for The Belt again.
