The top-ranked, 3-0 Southern Cal Trojans & coach Pete Carroll traveled to Tempe to meet the 14th ranked, 3-1 Arizona State Sun Devils of coach Dirk Koetter. This game fell into a familiar pattern for the Trojans as Arizona State took a 21-3 halftime lead only to watch Southern Cal score 35 points in the 2nd half to claim a 38-28 win. Southern Cal's RB LenDale White & All-American RB Reggie Bush combined for 355 yards rushing with 4 touchdowns as the Trojans amassed 631 yards of total offense. The teams combined for 1046 yards of total offense but 5 interceptions of Sun Devils’ QB Sam Keller by the Trojans’ defense helped to spell the difference in the game. The only points of the 1st quarter came when Arizona State's All-Pac 10 KR Terry Richardson returned a punt 84 yards for a touchdown as the Sun Devils took a 7-0 lead. Southern Cal's PK Mario Danelo accounted for the Trojans only points of the 1st half with a 36-yard field goal. Keller connected with TE Jamaal Lewis on a 7-yard touchdown pass as Arizona State pushed the lead to 14-3. After a Southern Cal punt, Keller led a 4-play, 55-yard drive capped by a 5-yard touchdown run for RB Keegan Herring as the Sun Devils finished the 1st half with a 21-3 advantage. The Trojans halftime adjustments seemed to have the desired effect as All-Pac 10 QB Matt Leinart led a 7-play, 80-yard drive to open the 3rd quarter with White scoring on a 32-yard touchdown run. Arizona State got a break when Southern Cal's All-American WR Dwayne Jarrett fumbled but Trojans' CB Justin Wyatt intercepted Keller’s pass on the next play giving Southern Cal the ball back at their own 36-yard line. Four plays later, Bush scored on a 24-yard touchdown run & the Trojans had closed to within 4 points at 21-17. Midway through the 4th quarter, Southern Cal took the lead with a 1-yard touchdown run by Leinart. The Sun Devils responded immediately with a 10-play, 70-yard drive with Keller connecting with TE Lee Burghgraef on a 1-yard touchdown pass for a 28-24 Arizona State lead. With just 5:57 to play, Southern Cal’s explosive offense again showed why they are Belt holders with a 5-play, 80-yard drive in just 2:13 as Bush scored on a 34-yard run for a 31-28 Trojans' advantage. Keller’s 4th interception came 0:12 later when Southern Cal's S Kevin Ellison caught a pass that went through the hands of Sun Devils' All-Pac 10 WR Derek Hagan giving the Trojans the ball back at their own 44-yard line. Three plays later, White took a handoff & raced 46 yards for the clinching score. Keller got Arizona State back inside the Southern Cal 10-yard line but with 0:53 left, Trojans' CB John Walker made his second interception of the day on Keller’s pass allowing Southern Cal to run out the clock. White finished with 197 yards rushing with 2 touchdowns & Bush added 158 yards rushing to his 2 scores. For Arizona State, Keller finished with 347 yards passing with 2 touchdowns but 5 interceptions while being sacked 5 times & Hagan had 10 catches for 162 yards. Southern Cal finished the season 0-1 which includes 12 wins vacated as a result of Bush being declared ineligible by the NCAA; Pac 10 Champions & ranked 2nd nationally while the Sun Devils finished 7-5. Arizona State has not played for The Belt again.
