The top-ranked, 6-0 Southern Cal Trojans with coach Pete Carroll hosted the 1-5 Washington Huskies of coach Keith Gilbertson. Washington held the record for most title reigns at 9 with the Trojans while Southern Cal holds a 3-2 edge in head-to-head match-ups but this Huskies team was not equipped to deal with the power & speed of the Trojans. The Trojans’ defense held Washington to 50 yards rushing, 63 yards passing & 6 first downs in the Southern Cal 38-0 shutout. The Huskies were only in Southern Cal territory once in the game & that drive, started by a recovered fumble at the Trojans' 36-yard line, resulted in a missed field goal. Southern Cal's Heisman Trophy winning, All-American QB Matt Leinart threw for 2 touchdowns & RB LenDale White had 2 rushing touchdowns. The Trojans' defense led by All-American LB Matt Grootegoed & All-American DE Shaun Cody held Washington to 0 for 14 on 3rd down conversions. After a scoreless 1st quarter, the Trojans got a 29-yard field goal from PK Ryan Killeen early in the 2nd quarter. Leinart then connected with All-Pac 10 RB Reggie Bush on a 15-yard touchdown pass for a 10-0 halftime lead. White’s first touchdown came on a 3-yard run on the Trojans’ opening drive of the 3rd quarter & Leinart connected with WR Jason Mitchell on a 29-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 24-0. White’s second touchdown on a 2-yard run made it 31-0 as the teams headed for the 4th quarter. Trojans' RB Desmond Reed finished the scoring for Southern Cal with a 28-yard touchdown run. Leinart finished with 217 yards passing with his 2 scores for the Trojans while Washington's QB Isaiah Stanback was held to just 27 yards passing completing only 3 of 16 pass attempts. Southern Cal finished the season 11-0 which does not include 2 wins that were vacated by the NCAA as Bush was ruled ineligible for the final 2 games of the season; Pac 10 Champions & National Champions while the Huskies finished 1-10 in Gilbertson’s final season. Washington would play for The Belt again in 2005.
