The top-ranked, 2-0 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Pete Carroll traveled to Provo to meet the 1-1 Brigham Young Cougars of coach Gary Crowton. The Cougars were a 2-time Belt champion & had a 9-4 overall record in Belt games but the Trojans were too much for this Brigham Young team. Southern Cal’s All-Pac 10 RB Reggie Bush scored twice while the Trojans’ defense held the Cougars to 27 yards rushing & 221 total yards in a 42-10 rout. Brigham Young took a 3-0 lead when All-American P/PK Matt Payne hit a 46-yard field goal before Bush ignited the Trojans’ offense. Southern Cal raced to a 21-3 halftime lead as Bush scored on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Heisman Trophy winning, All-American QB Matt Leinart & a 66-yard touchdown run late in the 2nd quarter. Leinart hit WR Dwayne Jarrett on a 15-yard touchdown pass as the Trojans scored their 21 points in the final 8:30 of the first half. Brigham Young’s one bright spot came early in the 3rd quarter when QB John Beck hit All-MWC WR Todd Watkins for a 69-yard touchdown pass making the score 21-10 but the rest of the game belonged to Southern Cal. The Trojans opened the 4th quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run from Leinart, RB LenDale White broke loose for a 43-yard touchdown run, & RB Lee Webb adding a 9-yard touchdown run for the final points. Leinart threw for 236 yards with 2 touchdowns, Bush added 124 yards rushing on 14 carries to his 2 scores, & RB LenDale White rushed for 110 yards with a touchdown on 17 carries. All-American DE Shaun Cody had 2 sacks & All-American LB Matt Grootegoed intercepted a pass for the second consecutive game to lead the defense. Beck had 194 yards passing with a touchdown but 3 interceptions while being sacked 3 times & Watkins was held to 4 catches for 94 yards with his touchdown for the Cougars. Southern Cal finished the season 11-0 which does not include 2 wins that were vacated by the NCAA as Bush was ruled ineligible for the final 2 games of the season; Pac 10 Champions & National Champions while the Cougars finished 5-6 in Crowton’s final season. Brigham Young has not played for The Belt again.
