The top-ranked, 1-0 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Pete Carroll hosted the 0-1 Colorado State Rams of coach Sonny Lubick. The Rams had held the Belt in the 1994 & 1995 seasons but this title-holder was nothing like they teams Colorado State had faced in the past. The Trojans used their explosive offense & stifling defense led by All-American DE Shaun Cody to shutout the Rams 49-0. Late in the 1st quarter, Southern Cal's RB LenDale White opened the scoring with an 11-yard touchdown run. On the first play of the 2nd quarter, Trojans' All-American LB Matt Grootegoed intercepted Rams' QB Justin Holland. Grootegoed returned the pick 57 yards to the Colorado State 32-yard line. Southern Cal's Heisman Trophy winning, All-American QB Matt Leinart threw a 31-yard pass to RB Chris McFoy before White carried the final yard for the score & a 14-0 lead. White's third touchdown came on a 3-yard run to cap a 7-play, 74-yard scoring drive putting the Trojans ahead 21-0. Late in the quarter, the Rams' CB Liddon Levine recovered fumble by Southern Cal's WR Greig Carlson at the Trojans' 8-yard line. On the next snap, Holland completed a pass to All-MWC TE Joel Dreessen who made the catch but was unable to retain possession of the ball when he was hit by Southern Cal's CB Justin Wyatt. Trojans' S Jason Leach recovered the ball at the Southern Cal 4-yard line to end the scoring threat. The Trojans drove 96 yards in 9 plays with All-Pac 10 RB Reggie Bush carrying 7 yards for a score & a 28-0 halftime lead. In the 3rd quarter, Leinart completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to WR Steve Smith & a 4-yard touchdown pass to WR Dwayne Jarrett. The final score came early in the 4th quarter when Holland was sacked by Southern Cal's DE Jeff Schweiger who forced a fumble that was recovered by Trojans' DT Manuel Wright. Wright ran 20 yards for the touchdown & a 49-0 rout. Southern Cal's defense held Colorado State to 48 yards rushing while forcing 6 turnovers. Leinart threw for 231 yards with 2 touchdowns, White finished with 123 yards rushing with his 3 scores, & Grootegoed had 2 interceptions for the Trojans. Holland threw for 233 yards but had 4 interceptions & was sacked 4 times while Dreessen was held to 5 catches for 23 yards with a fumble & WR David Anderson had 9 catches for 137 yards in the losing effort. Southern Cal finished the season 11-0 which does not include 2 wins that were vacated by the NCAA as Bush was ruled ineligible for the final 2 games of the season; Pac 10 Champions & National Champions while the Rams finished 4-7. Colorado State has not played for The Belt again.
