The 14th ranked, 8-2 Syracuse Orangemen & coach Paul Pasqualoni traveled to the Orange Bowl with upset on their mind as they met the top-ranked, 8-0 Miami Hurricanes of coach Larry Coker.  They left with a healthy respect for exactly how good the Hurricanes were.  Coming off a close call at Boston College, Miami was determined to show everyone what the top team in the nation looked like.  Hurricanes' All-Big East QB Ken Dorsey threw 3 touchdowns in the 1st half as Miami took a commanding 24-0 lead on their way to a 59-0 rout.  Syracuse was held to 185 total yards by the suffocating Hurricanes' defense.  Miami's All-American OT Bryant McKinnie held Syracuse’s All-American DE Dwight Freeney, the NCAA Sack leader, without a sack & the Hurricanes rushed for 331 yards as the Miami offensive line dominated the Orangemen.  Hurricanes' All-Big East PK Todd Sievers kicked a 48-yard field goal & Dorsey threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to WR Andre Johnson in the opening quarter.  Dorsey's 2nd quarter touchdown passes came on an 8-yard connection with All-Big East TE Jeremy Shockey & a 31-yard strike to Johnson.  In the 3rd quarter, the Hurricanes scored on a 10-yard pass from Dorsey to Shockey, a 3-yard run by RB Najeh Davenport, & a 15-yard touchdown run from All-Big East RB Clinton Portis.  Miami's All-Big East CB Phillip Buchanon returned an interception 76 yards for a score & back-up QB Derrick Crudup carried in from 15 yards for the final points.  Dorsey finished with 224 yards passing with 4 touchdowns, Shockey had 2 touchdown receptions, RB Frank Gore had 153 yards rushing, & All-Big East RB Clinton Portis had 132 yards rushing with a touchdown.  Buchanon starred defensively with his interception return as well as recovering a fumble, getting a 17-yard sack & a 59-yard punt return to set up another score.  Syracuse's QB A.J. Anderson threw for just 66 yards with an interception in the loss.  Miami finished the season 12-0; Big East & National Champions while the Orangemen finished 10-3 & ranked 14th nationally.  Syracuse would play for The Belt again in 2002.
