The 2nd ranked, 2-0 Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden welcomed the 2-0 North Carolina Tar Heels of coach Carl Torbush.  In last season’s match-up, Florida State had coasted to a 42-10 win & this season looked to be a repeat.  The Seminoles led 36-7 at the half on their way to a 63-14 drubbing of the undermanned Tar Heels.  Heisman Trophy winning, All-ACC QB Chris Weinke threw for 262 yards with 4 touchdowns, RB Travis Minor rushed for 112 yards, All-American WR Marvin “Snoop” Minnis had 5 catches for 132 yards with 2 touchdowns in the rout.  Seminoles’ WR Atrews Bell had touchdown catches of 35 & 46 yards as a part of his 3 receptions for 96 yards.  The only blemish for Florida State may have been the kicking game as 2 different kickers missed 3 extra point kicks before PK Matt Munyon successfully converted both his tries to claim the starting position for the next game.  The Tar Heels hoped to make it a game in the opening quarter after Seminoles' RB William McCray scored on a 1-yard run & Weinke connected on a 35-yard touchdown pass to Bell.  Trailing 14-0, North Carolina drove 90 yards in 10 plays with the touchdown coming on an 11-yard run by RB Anthony Saunders.  The Seminoles took control of the game as the Tar Heels fumbled twice in the 2nd quarter.  One of the fumbles was returned 12 yards by Florida State's S Chris Hope for a score while the other resulted in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Weinke to Minnis.  North Carolina's QB Ronald Curry threw for 235 yards with a touchdown but an interception & 3 Tar Heel fumbles ended any thoughts of an upset.  The Seminoles held North Carolina's All-ACC TE Alge Crumpler without a catch.  Florida State finished the season 11-2; ACC Champions, ranked 5th nationally while the Tar Heels finished 6-5 in Torbush’s final season.  North Carolina has not played for The Belt again.
