The 2nd ranked, 10-1 Miami Hurricanes of coach Butch Davis met the 7th ranked, 10-2 Florida Gators of coach Steve Spurrier in the Sugar Bowl. The Hurricanes were clearly disappointed being denied the opportunity by the BCS computer system to meet the Oklahoma Sooners in the BCS Championship game but settled for a Belt battle with rival Florida. There was also talk that Davis was leaving the Hurricanes to accept an NFL job so this became a farewell game for their coach as well. Miami's All-Big East QB Ken Dorsey threw 3 touchdown passes to lead the Hurricanes to a 37-20 farewell victory over the Gators to retain The Belt. Florida opened the scoring when QB Rex Grossman hit TE Kirk Wells on a 23-yard touchdown pass. Miami responded with a 44-yard field goal from PK Todd Sievers & an 8-yard touchdown pass from Dorsey to All-Big East TE Jeremy Shockey giving the Hurricanes a 10-7 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The teams each added a field goal, Sievers from 29 yards & Gators’ PK Jeff Chandler from 51 yards, as the teams went to their locker rooms with Miami leading 13-10 at the half. The 3rd quarter saw Florida’s CB Keiwan Ratliff intercepting Dorsey & returning it to the Miami 36-yard line. On the next snap, RB Earnest Graham raced the final 36 yards giving Florida a 17-13 advantage. The Hurricanes responded on their next drive as Dorsey connected with RB D.J. Williams on a 19-yard touchdown pass giving the lead back to Miami at 20-17. A 44-yard punt return by Hurricanes' WR Daryl Jones set up a 2-yard touchdown pass from Dorsey to RB Najeh Davenport for a 27-17 lead. Each kicker added a field goal in the 4th quarter, Chandler from 26 yards & Sievers from 29 yards, as Miami’s defense stiffened. Davenport added his 2nd score on a 3-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring as the Hurricanes capped their season with a 37-20 Belt victory. Dorsey finished with 270 yards passing to go with his 3 touchdowns while Grossman had 252 yards with a touchdown, & Graham had 136 yards rushing to go with his touchdown in the losing effort. Miami finished 11-1; Big East Champions, ranked 2nd nationally in Davis’ final season while the Gators finished 10-3, SEC Champions, & ranked 10th nationally. Florida would play for The Belt again in 2002.
