The 4th ranked, 4-1 Miami Hurricanes of coach Butch Davis traveled to Philadelphia to meet the 4-3 Temple Owls of coach Bobby Wallace.  Miami took a 28-10 lead to halftime on their way to a 45-17 victory over the undermanned Owls.  The Owls took an early 3-0 lead when PK Cap Poklemba hit a field goal from 42 yards, as the Hurricane offense seemed sluggish after their big win over Florida State & a week off.  Miami's All-American WR Santana Moss jump-started the Hurricanes with a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown.  Hurricanes' All-Big East QB Ken Dorsey threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to RB D.J. Williams early in the 2nd quarter but Temple kept the game close at 14-10 when DE Raheem Brock recovered a fumble in the end zone.  Miami next drive took just 1 play as Dorsey connected with Moss for a 67-yard touchdown pass & the Hurricanes never looked back.  Miami's RB Najeh Davenport added a 1-yard touchdown run giving the Hurricanes a 28-10 halftime lead.  Miami's PK Todd Sievers kicked a 24-yard field goal for the only points of the 3rd quarter.  Hurricanes' RB James Jackson scored on a 4-yard touchdown run before Miami's All-Big East S Ed Reed returned an interception 27 yards for the Hurricanes final points.  Owls' RB Harold Jackson closed the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run with 0:10 left in the game.  Dorsey threw for 193 yards with 2 touchdowns as well as his first interception of the season, Moss finished with 4 catches for 96 yards with a touchdown as well as the return score.  Temple's RB Tanardo Sharps, the Big East’s leading rusher, was held to 37 yards on 14 carries & QB Devin Scott threw for 129 yards with an interception.  Miami finished 11-1; Big East Champions, ranked 2nd nationally in Davis’ final season while the Owls finished 4-7.  Temple would play for The Belt again in 2001.
