The 2nd ranked, 8-1 Miami Hurricanes of coach Butch Davis met the 5-4 Syracuse Orangemen of coach Paul Pasqualoni. The Hurricanes used their suffocating defense, led by All-American LB Dan Morgan & All-Big East S Ed Reed, to dominate in a 26-0 win. Miami got a 23-yard field goal from PK Todd Sievers in the 1st quarter that would have been enough for the defense. The 2nd quarter saw Hurricanes' RB James Jackson score on runs of 5 & 33 yards while All-Big East QB Ken Dorsey connected with WR Reggie Wayne on a 32-yard touchdown pass. Sievers finished the scoring with a 33-yard field goal in the 4th quarter. Miami held the Orangemen, who had averaged 206 yards per game rushing, to 83 yards rushing & 83 yards passing in the shutout. Jackson rushed for 101 yards with 2 touchdowns while Dorsey threw for 263 yards with a touchdown. Syracuse played without All-Big East DE Dwight Freeney, the nation’s leader with 13 sacks, who was out due to a viral infection & QB A.J. Anderson threw for just 83 yards with an interception. Miami finished 11-1; Big East Champions, ranked 2nd nationally in Davis’ final season while the Orangemen finished 6-5. Syracuse would play for The Belt again in 2001.
