The 2-6 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs coached by Jack Bicknell, Jr. battled the 4th ranked, 5-1 Miami Hurricanes of coach Butch Davis.  The Hurricanes were 41 ˝ point favorites & probably took the Bulldogs lightly but their talent overcame their sloppy play that included 4 turnovers & 12 penalties.  Miami's All-American WR Santana Moss scored twice in the first half on a 43-yard reverse & a 69-yard punt return as the Hurricanes took a 28-10 advantage.  Louisiana Tech's WR Faheem Ali’s two touchdown catches helped the Bulldogs keep the game close but they could never quite get over the hump as Miami posted a 42-31 win.  In addition to Moss' score in the opening quarter, the Hurricanes got a 1-yard touchdown run from RB James Jackson for a 14-0 lead.  The 2nd quarter saw the teams trade scores with the Bulldogs getting a 51-yard field goal from PK Josh Scobee & a 1-yard touchdown run from QB Luke McCown while Miami got another 1-yard touchdown run from Jackson as well as Moss' punt return giving the Hurricanes a 28-10 halftime lead.  In the 3rd quarter the teams again traded scores with McCown throwing a 1-yard touchdown pass to Ali while Miami's All-Big East QB Ken Dorsey threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to WR Reggie Wayne.  Leading 35-17 as the 4th quarter started, the Hurricanes had to avoid a letdown to retain The Belt.  McCown connected with WR Delwyn Daigre on an 8-yard touchdown pass getting the Bulldogs within 11 points at 35-24.  Miami responded with a 10-yard touchdown run from RB Najeh Davenport before Louisiana Tech got a 14-yard touchdown pass from McCown to Ali for the final scoring.  Miami rushed for 327 yards while Tech managed only 67 yards rushing against the Hurricane defense.  Miami’s Dorsey finished with 185 yards passing with a touchdown but 3 interceptions while Jackson had 179 yards rushing with 2 touchdowns.  The Bulldogs’ McCown had 72 passing attempts (an NCAA record for a freshman quarterback) for 418 yards, 3 touchdowns, 1 rushing touchdown, with 3 interceptions & Daigre made 10 catches for 145 yards with a touchdown.  Miami finished 11-1; Big East Champions, ranked 2nd nationally in Davis’ final season while the Bulldogs finished 3-9.  Louisiana Tech would play for The Belt again in 2007.
