The 2nd ranked, 4-0 Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden traveled to College Park to meet the 2-1 Maryland Terrapins of coach Ron Vanderlinden. The Seminoles had won last season’s meeting 49-10. Florida State jumped to a 25-0 lead before Maryland got their first 1st down; that came on a 74-yard touchdown run by RB LaMont Jordan. The Terrapins were held to 8 first downs for the game, 4 of those coming on the final Terrapin drive as time was expiring. When the final gun had sounded, Florida State had a 59-7 win. Seminoles' RB William McCray opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run capping an 8-play, 59-drive. Florida State's PK Matt Munyon hit a 44-yard field goal pushing the Seminoles' lead to 10-0 at the end of the 1st quarter. Florida State's All-American DE Jamal Reynolds sacked Maryland's QB Calvin McCall in the end zone for a 12-0 lead & after the free kick, Heisman Trophy winning, All-ACC QB Chris Weinke hit WR Robert Morgan for a 58-yard touchdown pass. McCray’s 2-yard touchdown run gave the Seminoles a 25-0 lead with 6:22 left in the half. Jordan’s touchdown run followed but Weinke connected with WR Atrews Bell on a 2-yard touchdown pass for a 32-7 halftime lead. Weinke hit Bell on a 34-yard touchdown pass to open the 3rd quarter & RB Randy Golightly scored on a 1-yard touchdown run for a 45-7 Florida State lead at the end of the 3rd quarter. Florida State's back-up QB Marcus Outzen connected with WR Devard Darling on a 15-yard touchdown pass early in the 4th quarter & RB Davy Ford capped the Florida State rout with a 5-yard touchdown run for the final points. Weinke threw for 234 yards with 3 touchdowns while Morgan added 3 catches for 103 yards. Jordan finished with 114 yards with a touchdown & McCall threw for 100 yards on 10 of 27 passing with an interception for the Terrapins. Florida State finished the season 11-2; ACC Champions, ranked 5th nationally while the Terrapins finished 5-6 in Vanderlinden’s final season. Maryland has not played for The Belt again.
