The 17th ranked Texas Longhorns of coach Mack Brown opened the season against the North Carolina State Wolfpack of coach Mike O’Cain. The Texas defense held the Wolfpack to 65 yards passing & 172 total yards while forcing 4 turnovers. Longhorns’ All-Big 12 QB Major Applewhite threw for 316 yards with a touchdown but the Wolfpack’s special teams spelled the difference in The Belt match-up. North Carolina State blocked three punts, two by S Terrence Holt, which were converted to two Wolfpack touchdowns & a safety. The Longhorns took a 17-9 halftime lead after Applewhite hit RB Victor Ike with a short pass that he took 80 yards for a touchdown. After a scoreless 3rd quarter, Wolfpack WR Eric Leak blocked a punt by P Ryan Long that CB Tony Scott carried 48 yards for a touchdown making the score Texas 17 North Carolina State 15. The last block came with Texas up 20-15 & only 3:32 to play when Holt came from the right side to block Long’s kick. This time Leak picked up the ball & carried it 48 yards for the go ahead score. After the 2-point conversion, the Wolfpack led 23-20. The Longhorns final drive was stopped when All-ACC CB Lloyd Harrison intercepted Applewhite’s “Hail Mary” pass as time expired. Texas clearly was feeling the absence of the graduated Ricky Williams in the running game as the Longhorns managed only 56 yards rushing on 36 carries. North Carolina State QB Jamie Barnette threw for 65 yards with an interception while the win gave the Wolfpack their second Belt reign & first since 1989. The Longhorns finished the season 9-5; ranked 21st nationally while the Wolfpack finished 6-6 in O’Cain’s final season. Texas would play for The Belt again in 2006.

The 24th ranked, 1-0 North Carolina State Wolfpack of coach Mike O’Cain welcomed South Carolina Gamecocks & first-year coach Lou Holtz to Raleigh. On a rainy night in North Carolina, neither team was able to manage much offense as the Gamecocks turned the ball over 5 times & the Wolfpack turned the ball over 3 times in a 10-0 North Carolina State win to retain The Belt. Both teams were flustered by the rain & high winds of Tropical Storm Dennis. North Carolina State’s PK Kent Passingham hit a field goal attempt from 22 yards for the only points in the first half. The only other score came when Wolfpack S Brian Williams blocked a Gamecock punt in the 4th quarter. North Carolina State WR Koren Robinson returned the blocked kick 5 yards for a touchdown giving the Wolfpack a 10-0 shutout win. North Carolina State QB Jamie Barnette managed only 18 yards passing on 3 completions in the poor playing conditions but it was the blocked punt that decided the game. South Carolina quarterbacks completed only 5 passes in 18 attempts for 79 yards while RB Derek Watson rushed for 118 yards but was unable to get into the end zone. North Carolina State finished the season 6-6 in O’Cain’s final season while the Gamecocks finished 0-11. South Carolina has not played for The Belt again.

The 2-0 North Carolina State Wolfpack of coach Mike O’Cain welcomed the 0-1 William & Mary Tribe of coach Jimmye Laycock. The Tribe, from the Atlantic 10 Conference, was the fourth Division 1-AA team & first Division 1-AA team from a conference other than the Southern League to have a shot at The Belt but they had no greater success than the first three Division 1-AA challengers. Wolfpack QB Jamie Barnette threw for 237 yards with a touchdown, as North Carolina State held the ball for 35:53 of the game on their way to posting a 38-9 victory. WR Koren Robinson had 5 receptions for 103 yards while the Wolfpack defense held the Tribe to just 3 field goals from All-Atlantic 10 PK Brett Sterba. William & Mary managed only 32 yards on the ground as the Division 1-AA foe was overwhelmed by their Division 1 opponent. William & Mary QB Daron Pope threw for 134 yards with an interception in the loss. North Carolina State finished the season 6-6 in O’Cain’s final season while the Tribe finished 6-5. The 20th ranked, 3-0 North Carolina State Wolfpack of coach Mike O’Cain met the top-ranked, 2-0 Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden. The Wolfpack had upset the Seminoles the previous season & Florida State was not going to let that happen again. All-American PK Sebastian Janikowski kicked 5 field goals while the Seminoles' defense returned 2 turnovers for touchdowns in a 42-11 rout of North Carolina State. The teams traded 1st quarter field goals but Florida State’s offense was starting to roll. After a 1-yard scoring run from FB Dan Kendra, Janikowski hit 3 more field goals giving Florida State an 18-3 halftime lead. The Seminoles opened the 2nd half with a RB Travis Minor 2-yard run before the Wolfpack got in the end zone for the only time in the game; a 3-yard touchdown run from RB Rahshon Spikes. Turnovers were the difference in the game as Florida State defense, led by All-American NG Corey Simon, intercepted Wolfpack QB Jamie Barnette 4 times as well as recovering 2 fumbles. Florida State LB Jamal Reynolds recovered a fumble in the Wolfpack’s end zone & DB Abdual Howard returned an interception 47 yards for another score. Seminoles' QB Chris Weinke threw for 229 yards with 2 interceptions while North Carolina State's Barnette threw for 129 yards with his 4 interceptions. The Wolfpack finished 6-6 in O’Cain’s final season while the Seminoles finished 12-0, ACC Champions, & National Champions. North Carolina State would play for The Belt again in 2003.

The top-ranked, 5-0 Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden welcomed to Tallahassee the 19th ranked, 2-2 Miami Hurricanes of coach Butch Davis. The Seminoles played without All-American WR Peter Warrick who was suspended after his arrest on a grand theft charge stemming from a shoplifting incident. After an explosive first half offensively, the Florida State defense shutdown the Miami offense as the Seminoles retained The Belt with a 31-21 victory. The teams traded punches in the first half with the Seminoles opening with a 48-yard touchdown pass from QB Chris Weinke to WR Germaine Stringer who was filling in for the suspended Warrick. The Hurricanes responded with an 8-yard touchdown pass from QB Kenny Kelly to WR Reggie Wayne. Florida State got the lead back when RB Jeff Chaney scored from 3 yards but Kelly connected with All-Big East WR Santana Moss for an 80-yard touchdown as the teams were tied 14-14 at the end of the 1st quarter. Miami took their only lead of the day on a 14-yard touchdown catch by Moss. Weinke’s 18-yard pass to TE Ryan Sprague got the teams to 21-21 at the half. Both defenses finally showed up in the 2nd half. Florida State’s, led by All-America NG Corey Simon, held Miami scoreless the last 2 quarters but All-American PK Sebastian Janikowski’s 38-yard field goal & RB Travis Minor’s 2-yard touchdown run spelled the difference. Both quarterbacks finished with outstanding numbers; Weinke had 332 yards with 2 touchdowns while Kelly closed with 370 yards & 3 touchdowns. Minor finished with 146 yards with a touchdown for the Seminoles & Moss finished with 9 catches for 180 yards with 2 touchdowns for the Hurricanes. Florida State finished the season 12-0; ACC Champions, & National Champions while the Hurricanes finished 9-4 & ranked 15th nationally. Miami would play for The Belt again in 2000.

The top-ranked, 6-0 Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden welcomed the 3-2 Wake Forest Demon Deacons of coach Jim Caldwell to Tallahassee for the Seminoles Homecoming. Off their battle with Miami, the Seminoles were understandably passive early in their match-up with their ACC rival. Florida State again played without All-American WR Peter Warrick who had been suspended due to a felony theft charge stemming from a shoplifting incident. A slow 1st half was not enough to hold down the talented Seminoles as they retained the title with a 33-10 Homecoming victory over the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest took an early lead on a 24-yard field goal from PK Matt Burdick. Florida State’s All-American PK Sebastian Janikowski accounted for the Seminoles’ 1st half offense with field goals from 31, 34, & 52 yards giving the Seminoles a closer than expected 9-3 halftime lead. In the 2nd half, QB Chris Weinke & WR Atrews Bell connected twice for touchdowns in the 3rd quarter to give the Seminoles a comfortable lead. WR Anquan Boldin scored on a 2-yard run & Janikowski added his 4th field goal of the day. Wake Forest’s only touchdown came on a 1-yard pass from QB C.J. Leak to WR Fabian Davis as time expired. The Seminoles’ defense held the Demon Deacons to 42 yards rushing & 178 total yards. Weinke finished with 354 yards passing to go with his 2 touchdowns throws & Bell added 3 catches for 42 yards to his 2 scores. For Wake Forest, starting QB Ben Sankey threw for 102 yards while Leak threw for 34 yards with a touchdown in mop-up duty. Florida State finished the season 12-0; ACC Champions, & National Champions while the Demon Deacons finished 7-5. Wake Forest has not played for The Belt again.

The top-ranked, 7-0 Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden met the 3-3 Clemson Tigers of first-year coach Tommy Bowden. The game was significant for many reasons; it featured a Belt match-up, Seminoles’ All-American WR Peter Warrick played for the first time in 3 weeks after the resolution of his Grand Theft charge, a father & son faced each other as head coaches for the first time in major college football, & Bobby Bowden tried to win his 300th game as a head coach. All-American PK Sebastian Janikowski kicked 3 field goals as the Seminoles retained The Belt with a 17-14 victory. Janikowski gave the Seminoles a 1st quarter lead with a 33-yard field goal but the 2nd quarter belonged to the Tigers. QB Woody Dantzler hit WR Rod Gardner on a 7-yard touchdown pass to give Clemson the lead & Dantzler’s 1-yard touchdown run sent the Tigers to the locker room up 14-3. The Florida State defense took control of the 2nd half as the game got chippy; both teams were flagged for 85 yards in penalties including 3 personal fouls charged against the Tigers. The Seminoles did manage a Janikowski 33-yard field goal & a 1-yard touchdown run by RB Travis Minor in the 3rd quarter. With the 2-point conversion, Florida State had tied the game 14-14. Janikowski added his 3rd field goal, this one from 39 yards, with 5:25 to play giving the Seminoles a 17-14 lead. Clemson’s last chance to push the game to overtime ended when PK Tony Lazzara’s 42-yard field goal was short. Florida State QB Chris Weinke finished with 258 yards passing, Warrick had 11 catches for 121 yards receiving, & Minor had 100 yards rushing with his touchdown, but it was Janikowski who again proved the deciding factor giving Bobby Bowden his 300th career coaching victory. Dantzler finished with 102 yards passing & 86 yards rushing in the losing effort. Florida State finished the season 12-0; ACC Champions, & National Champions while the Tigers finished 6-6. Clemson has not played for The Belt again.

The top-ranked, 8-0 Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden traveled to Charlottesville to meet the 4-3 Virginia Cavaliers of coach George Welsh. The Seminoles’ defense held the Cavaliers to 76 yards passing on their way to a 35-10 victory. Florida State QB Chris Weinke threw 3 interceptions in the 1st half & QB Marcus Outzen fumbled at the 1-yard line on another drive stopping the Seminoles’ offense from dominating the game. The Cavaliers scored early in the 2nd quarter on a 16-yard run by All-American RB Thomas Jones. Florida State answered with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Weinke to WR Marvin “Snoop” Minnis. A 26-yard field goal from the Cavaliers’ PK Todd Braverman gave Virginia a 10-7 halftime edge. But Cavalier QB Dan Ellis was lost for the rest of the game after he got a concussion caused by two big hits he absorbed at the end of the drive. QB David Rivers took over for Virginia but he was unable to move the offense against the Florida State defense led by All-American NG Corey Simon. Weinke hit Minnis for a 20-yard score, & RB Travis Minor broke loose for a 66-yard touchdown run as Florida State dominated the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter, All-American WR Peter Warrick scored from 50 yards on a pass from Weinke & Outzen’s 1-yard touchdown run finished the Seminole scoring in a 35-10 win. Weinke passed for 297 yards to go with his 3 touchdowns while Jones starred for the Cavaliers with 164 yards rushing with a touchdown. Florida State finished the season 12-0; ACC Champions, & National Champions while the Cavaliers finished 7-5. Virginia has not played for The Belt again.

Florida’s only loss had been at home to Alabama 40-39 & both teams were playing for a probable shot in the BCS national championship game. Florida State RB Jeff Chaney scored from 2 yards to give the Seminoles a 23-16 lead with 0:34 left in the 3rd quarter.
