The 24th ranked, 2-0 North Carolina State Wolfpack of coach Mike O’Cain welcomed the 0-1 William & Mary Tribe of coach Jimmye Laycock.  The Tribe, from the Atlantic 10 Conference, was the fourth Division 1-AA team & first Division 1-AA team from a conference other than the Southern League to have a shot at The Belt but they had no greater success than the first three Division 1-AA challengers.  Wolfpack's QB Jamie Barnette threw for 237 yards with a touchdown, as North Carolina State held the ball for 35:53 of the game on their way to posting a 38-9 victory.  William & Mary managed only 32 yards on the ground as the Division 1-AA foe was overwhelmed by their Division 1 opponent.  It was clear from the outset things were not going to go in favor of the Tribe as QB Daron Pope threw an interception on the third play of the game.  The Wolfpack capitalized seven plays later when Barnette threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to TE Andy Vanderveer.  A 30-yard field goal from PK Kent Passingham pushed the North Carolina State lead to 10-0 before RB Ray Robinson finished the 1st quarter scoring with a 7-yard touchdown run for a 17-0 lead.  In the 2nd quarter, the Wolfpack got a 5-yard touchdown run from RB Derek Roberts before Barnette scored on a 15-yard run for a 31-0 lead with 5:35 left before halftime.  William & Mary averted the shutout just before intermission when All-Atlantic 10 PK Brett Sterba connected on a 44-yard field goal attempt.  North Carolina State's RB Eric Leak added a 14-yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter as both teams emptied their benches.  Sterba added field goals from 44 & 35 yards to account for the final points.  Wolfpack's WR Koren Robinson had 5 catches for 103 yards in the win while Pope threw for 134 yards with an interception for the Tribe.  North Carolina State finished the season 6-6 in O’Cain’s final season while the Tribe finished 6-5.  William & Mary has not played for The Belt again.
