The 24th ranked, 1-0 North Carolina State Wolfpack of coach Mike O’Cain welcomed South Carolina Gamecocks & first-year coach Lou Holtz to Raleigh. On a rainy night in North Carolina, neither team was able to manage much offense as the Gamecocks turned the ball over 5 times & the Wolfpack turned the ball over 3 times in a 10-0 North Carolina State win to retain The Belt. Both teams were flustered by the torrential rains & high winds of Tropical Storm Dennis as the Wolfpack managed just 96 yards of total offense while South Carolina amassed 232 yards. Early in the 2nd quarter, North Carolina State’s PK Kent Passingham hit a field goal attempt from 22 yards for the only points in the first half. Later in the quarter, the Gamecocks moved to the Wolfpack's 14-yard line before a holding penalty stopped the drive. In the 3rd quarter, South Carolina drove to the North Carolina State 32-yard line but 3 incomplete passes left the Gamecocks without a tally. The only other score came when Wolfpack's S Brian Williams blocked a punt from Gamecocks' P Courtney Leavitt early in the 4th quarter. North Carolina State's WR Koren Robinson returned the blocked kick 3 yards for a touchdown giving the Wolfpack their only touchdown of the game. North Carolina State's QB Jamie Barnette managed only 18 yards passing on 3 completions in the poor playing conditions but it was the blocked punt that decided the game. South Carolina's quarterbacks completed only 5 passes in 18 attempts for 79 yards while RB Derek Watson rushed for 118 yards but was unable to get into the end zone. South Carolina also was called for 7 penalties costing 62 yards that kept them from challenging the end zone. North Carolina State finished the season 6-6 in O’Cain’s final season while the Gamecocks finished 0-11. South Carolina would play for The Belt again 2009.
