The 17th ranked Texas Longhorns of coach Mack Brown opened the season against the North Carolina State Wolfpack of coach Mike O’Cain.  The Texas defense held the Wolfpack to 65 yards passing & 172 total yards while forcing 4 turnovers; Longhorns’ All-Big XII QB Major Applewhite threw for 316 yards with a touchdown but the Wolfpack’s special teams spelled the difference in The Belt match-up.  North Carolina State blocked three punts, two by S Terrance Holt, which were converted to two Wolfpack's touchdowns & a safety as North Carolina State claimed the title with a 23-20 win.  Things started well for Texas as S Aaron Babino recovered a fumble by Wolfpack's RB K.J. Stone at the North Carolina State 25-yard line.  Applewhite took advantage of the short field & scored on a 2-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Longhorns lead.  On the Wolfpack's next snap, RB Rahshon Spikes broke a 25-yard run but Texas' CB Quentin Jammer forced a fumble & LB De'Andre Lewis recovered for the Longhorns at the North Carolina State 38-yard line.  Unable to move the ball this time, Texas got a 48-yard field goal from PK Kris Stockton for a 10-0 lead midway through the 1st quarter.  The Wolfpack finally held on to the ball long enough for a 7-play, 80-yard drive with RB Ray Robinson scoring on a 25-yard run.  The 2nd quarter saw the first breakdown of the Longhorns' special teams as Leak broke through to block a punt from Texas' P Ryan Long forcing a safety & making the score Texas 10 North Carolina State 9.  After the Texas defense forced a quick punt, Applewhite found RB Victor Ike open for his only reception of the day & Ike turned it in to an 80-yard touchdown for a 17-9 halftime lead.  After a scoreless 3rd quarter, Holt blocked a punt by Long that CB Tony Scott carried 25 yards for a touchdown making the score Texas 17 North Carolina State 15.  Midway through the final quarter, Stockton converted a 26-yard field goal attempt for a 20-15 lead.  The last block came with only 3:32 to play when Holt came from the right side to block Long’s kick.  This time Leak picked up the ball & carried it 35 yards for the go-ahead score.  After the 2-point conversion, the Wolfpack led 23-20.  The Longhorns' final drive was stopped when All-ACC CB Lloyd Harrison intercepted Applewhite’s “Hail Mary” pass as time expired.  Texas clearly was feeling the absence of the graduated Ricky Williams in the running game as the Longhorns managed only 56 yards rushing on 36 carries but All-Big XII WR Kwame Cavil did have 10 catches for 94 yards.  North Carolina State's QB Jamie Barnette threw for 65 yards with an interception while the win gave the Wolfpack their second Belt reign & first since 1989.  The Longhorns finished the season 9-5; ranked 21st nationally while the Wolfpack finished 6-6 in O’Cain’s final season.  Texas would play for The Belt again in 2005.
