The 20th ranked, 3-0 North Carolina State Wolfpack of coach Mike O’Cain met the top-ranked, 2-0 Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden. The Wolfpack had upset the Seminoles the previous season & Florida State was not going to let that happen again. Florida State's All-American PK Sebastian Janikowski kicked 5 field goals while the Seminoles' defense forced 6 turnovers & returned 2 of those for touchdowns in a 42-11 rout of North Carolina State. The teams traded 1st quarter field goals with Janikowski connecting from 30 yards while the Wolfpack's PK Kent Passingham converted a 22-yard attempt but Florida State’s offense was starting to roll thanks to the defense giving them excellent field position. After a 1-yard scoring run from FB Dan Kendra early in the 2nd quarter, Janikowski hit 3 more field goals giving Florida State an 18-3 halftime lead. Janikowski also saved 2 points when he ran down North Carolina State's LB Clayton White after White intercepted a pass on the Seminoles' 2-point conversion attempt. The Seminoles opened the 2nd half with RB Travis Minor scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run before the Wolfpack got in the end zone for the only time in the game; a 3-yard touchdown run from RB Rahshon Spikes. Turnovers were the difference in the game as Florida State defense, led by All-American NG Corey Simon, intercepted Wolfpack's QB Jamie Barnette 4 times as well as recovering 2 fumbles. Florida State's LB Jamal Reynolds recovered a fumble in the Wolfpack’s end zone after DE David Warren stripped Barnette of the ball & Seminoles' S Abdual Howard returned an interception 47 yards for another score. The win gave Florida State their second Belt reign & first since 1989. Seminoles' QB Chris Weinke threw for 229 yards with 2 interceptions while North Carolina State's Barnette threw for 129 yards with his 4 interceptions & 2 fumbles. The Wolfpack finished 6-6 in O’Cain’s final season while the Seminoles finished 12-0, ACC Champions, & National Champions. North Carolina State would play for The Belt again in 2003.
