The top-ranked, 5-0 Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden welcomed to Tallahassee the 19th ranked, 2-2 Miami Hurricanes of coach Butch Davis.  After a 1st half in which the teams traded offensive punches, the Seminoles defense held firm in the 2nd half as Florida State retained The Belt with a 31-21 win.  The Seminoles played without All-American WR Peter Warrick who was suspended after his arrest on a grand theft charge stemming from a shoplifting incident.  After an explosive first half offensively, the Florida State defense shutdown the Miami offense as the Seminoles retained The Belt with a 31-21 victory.  The teams traded punches in the first half with the Seminoles opening with a 48-yard touchdown pass from QB Chris Weinke to WR Germaine Stringer.  The touchdown came 3:47 into the game & was set-up after Florida State's All-ACC LB Tommy Polley blocked a 46-yard field goal attempt from Miami's PK Andy Crosland.  Three minutes later, the Hurricanes responded with an 8-yard touchdown pass from QB Kenny Kelly to WR Reggie Wayne.  Florida State got the lead back when RB Jeff Chaney scored from 3 yards but Kelly connected with All-Big East WR Santana Moss for an 80-yard touchdown as the teams were tied 14-14 at the end of the 1st quarter.  Florida State had another chance to score in the quarter but RB Dan Kendra fumbled at the Miami 9-yard line & the Hurricanes' S Al Blades recovered.  Miami took their only lead of the day after an 89-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown catch by Moss.  Weinke’s 18-yard pass to TE Ryan Sprague got the teams to a 21-21 tie at the half.  The 2nd half was dominated by the defenses for both teams with the Seminoles getting the edge.  Florida State’s defense, led by All-America NG Corey Simon, held Miami scoreless the last 2 quarters.  Seminoles' All-American PK Sebastian Janikowski’s 38-yard field goal accounted for the only points of the 3rd quarter.  Weinke led a 97-yard drive that sealed the victory for Florida State early in the final quarter.  The highlight of the drive was a 54-yard pass & catch to WR Ron Dugans that put the ball at the Miami 30-yard line.  RB Travis Minor’s 2-yard touchdown run finished the drive & the Seminoles' defense shutdown all other Hurricanes' scoring threats.  Both quarterbacks finished with outstanding numbers; Weinke had 332 yards with 2 touchdowns while Kelly closed with 370 yards & 3 touchdowns.  Minor finished with 146 yards with a touchdown for the Seminoles & Moss finished with 9 catches for 180 yards with 2 touchdowns for the Hurricanes.  Florida State finished the season 12-0; ACC Champions, & National Champions while the Hurricanes finished 9-4 & ranked 15th nationally.  Miami would play for The Belt again in 2000.
