The top-ranked, 9-0 Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden welcomed the 5-4 Maryland Terrapins of coach Ron Vanderlinden.  Florida State's QB Chris Weinke tied an ACC record with 6 touchdown passes as the Seminoles retained The Belt with an easy 49-10 win.  Florida State had started slowly in the first half in each of their last three games & they were determined to make sure that didn’t happen in their final home game of the season.  Four touchdowns in the 1st half & a suffocating defense helped settle the outcome of the game.  Weinke connected WR Ron Dugans for a 6-yard touchdown pass late in the 1st quarter to open the scoring.  Early in the 2nd quarter, Terrapins' PK Brian Kopka hit a field goal from 38 yards to make the score 7-3 but that was as close as Maryland would get.  The Seminoles then unleashed the offense over the next 7 minutes as Weinke hit All-American WR Peter Warrick for a 5-yard touchdown pass, Dugans from 6 yards for a score & WR Atrews Bell from 30 yards for another to give Florida State a 28-3 halftime lead.  The 3rd quarter belonged to Weinke & Warrick as they connected from 26 & 28 yards for 2 more scores.  Florida State's back-up QB Marcus Outzen hit WR Greg Moore on a 35-yard touchdown pass in the 4th quarter to finish the Seminoles scoring.  Maryland's back-up QB Trey Evans hit TE Eric James on a 1-yard touchdown pass after a 77-yard kickoff return by RB Jermaine Arrington but it was far too late for the Terrapins.  Weinke finished with 304 yards passing to go with his 6 touchdown passes while Warrick had 134 yards receiving along with his 3 touchdown catches & the Seminoles' defense forced 5 turnovers as well as blocked 2 punts.  Maryland's All-ACC RB LaMont Jordan had 169 yards rushing for the Terrapins while Evans threw for only 56 yards with a touchdown but 4 interceptions in the losing effort.  Maryland's starting QB Latrez Harrison was injured in the 1st quarter & was unable to return.  Florida State finished the season 12-0; ACC Champions, & National Champions while the Terrapins finished 5-6.  Maryland would play for The Belt again in 2000.
