The top-ranked, 11-0 Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden met the 2nd ranked, 11-0 Virginia Tech Hokies of coach Frank Beamer in the Sugar Bowl for The Belt & the BCS National Championship.  This would be an offensive shootout between Florida State’s QB Chris Weinke, All-American WR Peter Warrick & Virginia Tech’s All-Big East QB Michael Vick.  Weinke & Warrick were brilliant as the Seminoles retained The Belt & claimed the BCS title with a 46-29 win.  On the Hokies' opening drive, Vick fumbled near the Seminoles’ goal line.  The Seminoles scored with 3:22 left in the opening quarter on a 64-yard pass from Weinke to Warrick.  Just over a minute later, the Seminoles’ special teams capitalized when RB Jeff Chaney picked up a punt blocked by All-ACC LB Tommy Polley & took it 6 yards for another score.  The Hokies got on the board when Vick hit WR Andre Davis on a 49-yard touchdown pass making the score Florida State 14, Virginia Tech 7 as the 2nd quarter started.  The Seminoles added to the lead as Weinke hit WR Ron Dugans on a 63-yard touchdown pass with 13:45 to play in the half.  After a stalled drive on Virginia Tech’s next possession, Warrick returned the punt 59 yards for another score giving the Seminoles a 28-7 lead.  Warrick's breakaway stunned the Hokies as their special teams had given up only 36 total yards on 9 punt returns all season.  After a spectacular 43-yard run earlier in the drive, Vick scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 0:37 to play in the half getting the Hokies to a 28-14 deficit as the teams went to their locker rooms.  Virginia Tech dominated the 3rd quarter as All-Big East PK Shayne Graham hit a field goal from 23 yards, & RB Andre Kendrick scored touchdowns on runs of 29 & 6 yards as the Hokies took a 29-28 lead after three quarters.  The second score that gave Virginia Tech the lead came after All-Big East CB Anthony Midget intercepted Weinke & the Hokies drove 59 yards in 7 plays for the go-ahead score.  The 4th quarter & National Championship belonged to the Seminoles.  Weinke hit Dugans for a 14-yard touchdown pass &, after Florida State's S Sean Key recovered a Vick fumble, All-American PK Sebastian Janikowski hit a 32-yard field goal to give Florida State a 39-29 lead.  The game was sealed when Virginia Tech's S Nick Sorensen was stopped by Florida State's CB Tay Cody & Chaney on a fake punt at the Hokies’ 43-yard line.  On the next snap, Weinke hit Warrick for the 43-yard touchdown pass for the final points.  Weinke threw for 329 yards with 4 touchdowns while Warrick had 6 receptions for 163 yards with 2 touchdowns to go with his return touchdown.  For Virginia Tech, Vick finished with 225 yards passing with a touchdown & 97 yards rushing with a touchdown but was sacked 7 times while the Hokies' defense held the Seminoles’ rushing attack to 30 net yards.  Virginia Tech outgained Florida State 503-359 & held the ball for 13 more minutes.  Florida State finished the season 12-0; ACC Champions, & National Champions while the Hokies finished 11-1, Big East Champions & ranked 2nd nationally.  Virginia Tech would play for The Belt again in 2000.
