The top-ranked, 3-0 Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden met the 1-1 North Carolina Tar Heels of coach Carl Torbush.  The Seminoles used a 28-point 1st quarter to dominate the Tar Heels in a 42-10 rout.  Florida State's RB Travis Minor scored twice on runs of 14 & 5 yards, S Sean Key returned an interception 25 yards for a score, & All-American WR Peter Warwick returned a punt 75 yards for another score.  All this before the game was 8 minutes old.  The Seminoles drove 80 yards on their opening drive & on the Tar Heels third snap from scrimmage, QB Ronald Curry was stripped of the ball by Florida State's DT Jerry Johnson.  Seminoles' DE David Warren recovered giving Florida State the ball at the North Carolina 25-yard line.  Minor's second touchdown came just 0:45 after the recovery.  Curry's first pass attempt of the game resulted in Key stepping in front of All-ACC TE Alge Crumpler, picking off the pass, & racing 25 yards for a 21-0 Florida State lead.  The next Tar Heels' drive ended after a first down & Warrick put the game effectively out of reach with his return score.  The Tar Heels got on the board in the 2nd quarter when PK Josh McGee hit a 36-yard field goal but 0:22 before halftime Seminoles' QB Chris Weinke found WR Atrews Bell open for a 25-yard touchdown pass to finish a 92-yard scoring drive that took just 0:90.  Florida State's QB Marcus Outzen scored on a 1-yard touchdown run early in the 3rd quarter that was set-up when Seminoles' S Derrick Gibson intercepted Curry & Warrick made an incredible catch over a Tar Heels' defender to the North Carolina 1-yard line.  North Carolina's RB Deon Dyer carried in from 1 yard to midway through the 3rd quarter finish the scoring.  Weinke threw for 272 yards & a touchdown while Warrick added 4 catches for 103 yards.  Weinke threw for 272 yards with 2 touchdowns as well as an interception while Warrick added 4 catches for 103 yards to his return score.  Curry threw for 119 yards but had 3 interceptions, fumbled once & was sacked 5 times while Crumpler was held to a single catch for 2 yards.  Florida State finished the season 12-0; ACC Champions, & National Champions while the Tar Heels finished 3-8.  North Carolina would play for The Belt again in 2000.
