The top-ranked, 10-0 Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden met the 3rd ranked, 9-1 Florida Gators & coach Steve Spurrier at “The Swamp” in Gainesville.  Florida’s only loss had been at home to Alabama 40-39 & both teams were playing for a probable shot in the BCS national championship game.  Florida State held off a strong rally from the Gators to retain The Belt with a 30-23 win.  The Seminoles got a 4-yard touchdown run from All-American WR Peter Warrick on their opening drive for the only 1st quarter score.  The drive covered 80 yards in 18 plays & took 7:02 of the quarter.  Kickers took over in the 2nd quarter as Florida State’s All-American PK Sebastian Janikowski hit from 22 & 27-yards & Florida’s All-SEC PK Jeff Chandler hit from 50 & 45-yards giving the Seminoles a 13-6 lead at the intermission.  In the 3rd quarter, the Gators drove to the Florida State 1-yard line before penalties forced Florida to settle for a 22-yard field goal from Chandler got the Gators within 4 points at 13-9.  Later in the quarter, Florida's CB Bennie Alexander returned an interception from Florida State's QB Chris Weinke 43 yards for a touchdown to give the Gators their only lead at 16-13.  Janikowski connected on a field goal from 54 yards to tie the game 16-16 after his 49-yard kick was nullified by a delay-of-game penalty against the Seminoles.  Florida State got a big break when All-ACC LB Tommy Polley blocked a punt by Florida's P Alan Rhine that was recovered by Seminoles’ S Jean Jeune at the Gators’ 21-yard line.  Florida State's RB Jeff Chaney scored from 2 yards to give the Seminoles a 23-16 lead with 0:34 left in the 3rd quarter.  Florida’s attempt to tie the game was stopped when Florida State's S Chris Hope intercepted Gators’ QB Doug Johnson's pass at the Seminoles’ 2-yard line.  Weinke then threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to WR Marvin “Snoop” Minnis for a 30-16 Florida State lead with 6:03 to play.  Florida rallied for a 3-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to WR Brian Haugabrook with 3:33 left.  Florida’s last chance ended when QB Jesse Palmer’s “Hail Mary” pass from the Florida State 40-yard line fell to the turf among several players.  The incomplete pass preserved a the win for the Seminoles.  Weinke finished with 263 yards passing to go with his touchdown & Warrick finished with 9 catches for 90 yards.  Florida’s Johnson threw for 214 yards with a touchdown while Palmer threw for 166 yards in the Gator’s two-quarterback system.  Florida State finished the season 12-0; ACC Champions, & National Champions while the Gators finished 9-4 & ranked 12th nationally.  Florida would play for The Belt again in 2001.
