The 20th ranked, 8-3 Texas Longhorns of first-year coach Mack Brown met the 25th ranked, 8-4 Mississippi State Bulldogs of coach Jackie Sherrill.  The Longhorns’ Heisman Trophy winning, All-American RB Ricky Williams rushed for 203 yards & 2 touchdowns to lead Texas to a 38-11 victory to retain The Belt.  The Bulldogs stacked the line of scrimmage & blitzed often trying unsuccessfully to stop Williams.  Texas' QB Major Applewhite made the Bulldogs pay for their focus on Williams by hitting All-Big XII WR Wane McGarity for touchdown passes of 59 & 52 yards in the 1st half as the Longhorns took a 14-0 lead.  Mississippi State got a 39-yard field goal from PK Brian Hazelwood but still trailed 14-3 at the intermission.  The 3rd quarter saw Texas put the game out of reach as they scored 24 points led by Williams’ 37-yard touchdown run just 2:26 into the quarter.  Midway through the quarter, Longhorns' PK Kris Stockton kicked a 47-yard field goal pushing the lead to 24-3.  Williams' second score of the game came on a 2-yard run that gave Texas a 31-3 lead.  The Bulldogs' last hope for a rally ended when they were unable to convert a 4th & 1 play from their own 18-yard line.  On the next play, Applewhite threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to WR Kwame Cavil for Texas' final points.  Early in the 4th quarter, Mississippi State's QB Matt Wyatt threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to WR Lahitia Grant for the game's final points.  Applewhite finished with 225 yards passing with 3 touchdowns, as the Bulldogs were unable to compete against the Longhorns’ on-slaught.  McGarity added 4 catches for 132 yards with his 2 touchdowns.  For Mississippi State, All-SEC RB James Johnson had 112 yards rushing & Wyatt threw for 156 yards with a touchdown in the losing effort.  Texas finished the season 9-3; ranked 15th nationally while the Bulldogs finished 8-4.  Mississippi State would play for The Belt again in 2009.
