The 13th ranked, 7-2 Missouri Tigers of coach Larry Smith met the 6th ranked, 9-1 Texas A&M Aggies of coach R.C. Slocum. Coach Smith has one of the oddest Belt game records; his teams have claimed The Belt 4 different times. Coaching for Arizona (’84-’85), USC (’90-’95), & Missouri (’97-’98) his 4 Belt reigns are the highest total for any coach but his teams have never successfully defended the title. Texas A&M needed a 39-yard field goal from PK Russell Bynum with 1:30 left to secure a 17-14 win to retain The Belt. After a scoreless 1st quarter, Bynum gave the Aggies the lead with a 38-yard field goal. The Tigers responded with a 65-yard drive capped by QB Corby Jones’ 10-yard run for the touchdown & 7-3 lead. Bynum’s 21-yarder with 0:44 left in the half sent the Aggies to the intermission down 7-6. The Aggies took the lead early in the 4th quarter with a 1-yard run by QB Randy McCown & 2-point conversion. Texas A&M appeared to take control of the game on an interception by CB Brandon Jennings but while returning the ball, Jennings’ lateral was fumbled & recovered by the Tigers at the Texas A&M 27-yard line. As the drive continued, Jones hit TE Dwayne Blakley from 9 yards out to tie the game at 14-14 for the Tigers. Bynum hit from 39 yards with 1:30 to play to give the Aggies a 17-14 lead. Missouri had one last chance but PK Brian Long’s 56-yard field goal attempt fell short. McCown finished with 87 yards passing for the Aggies while All-Big 12 RB Devin West had 113 yards rushing for the Tigers. Texas A&M finished the season 11-3; Big XII Champions, ranked 11th nationally while the Tigers finished 8-4 & ranked 21st nationally. Missouri would play for The Belt again in 2007.
