The 4th ranked Washington Huskies of coach Jim Lambright traveled to Provo to meet the 19th ranked Brigham Young Cougars of coach Lavell Edwards. Washington held the Cougars to just 2 yards rushing on their way to a 42-20 rout. Brigham Young opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run by QB Paul Shoemaker. The Huskies responded with a 2-yard touchdown run by RB Maurice Shaw that tied the game 7-7. Washington dominated the 2nd quarter, scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run by All-Pac 10 RB Rashaan Shehee & a 2-yard touchdown pass from QB Brock Huard to WR Fred Coleman for a 21-7 halftime lead. The 3rd quarter went no better for the Cougars as Shaw scored from 3 yards while Huard threw a 23-yard touchdown pass, his second of 3 touchdown passes, to Shehee giving Washington a 35-7 at the start of the 4th quarter. Brigham Young's QB Kevin Feterik threw touchdown passes of 62 to WR Aaron Roderick & 34 yards to WR Ben Cahoon in the 4th quarter. Huard added his third touchdown pass, a 27-yarder to Coleman to finish the scoring. The win gave the Huskies their 9th Belt reign, the most of any team to date, & first since 1993. Shehee finished with 171 yards rushing with his touchdown, Huard finished with 285 yards passing with his 3 touchdowns, & All-Pac 10 WR Jerome Pathon added 7 catches for 163 yards. For the Cougars, Feterik finished with 216 yards passing with 2 touchdowns & Cahoon added 6 catches for 106 yards with a touchdown. The Cougars finished the season 6-5 while the Huskies finished 8-4 & ranked 18th nationally. Brigham Young would play for The Belt again in 2000.
