The 1-0 San Diego State Aztecs with coach Ted Tollner traveled to Seattle to meet the 3rd ranked, 1-0 Washington Huskies of coach Jim Lambright. Washington's QB Brock Huard threw for 314 yards with 4 touchdowns while the Huskies' defense held the Aztecs to -7 yards rushing as Washington retained The Belt with a 36-3 win. Huard connected with All-Pac 10 WR Jerome Pathon on a 12-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring. Early in the 2nd quarter, Washington's PK Randy Jones hit an 18-yard field goal to give the Huskies a 10-0 lead. Huard hit WR Fred Coleman with a 9-yard touchdown pass to stretch the lead to 17-0. The Aztec managed a 31-yard field goal from PK Nate Tandberg with 0:07 left in the half as the teams went to the locker rooms with Washington leading 17-3. Huard & Pathon connected again in the 3rd quarter on a 53-yard touchdown pass. Jones 29-yard field goal pushed the Washington lead to 27-3 as the 4th quarter started. A safety by Huskies' All-Pac 10 LB Jerry Jensen & Huard’s 12-yard touchdown pass to TE Reggie Davis finished the scoring. Pathon finished with 8 catches for 182 yards with 2 touchdowns for the Huskies while San Diego State's QB Kevin McKechnie threw for 203 yards with 2 interceptions & WR Az Hakim had 7 catches for 108 yards for the Aztecs. Washington finished the season 8-4; ranked 18th nationally while the Aztecs finished 5-7. San Diego State would play for The Belt again in 2003.
