The 1-1 Colorado State Rams of coach Sonny Lubick met the 21st ranked, 2-0 Air Force Falcons of coach Fisher DeBerry. Colorado State's RB E.J. Watson rushed for 122 yards with 2 touchdowns & All-American S Greg Myers ended the Falcons’ last hope with an interception at the Rams’ 10-yard line with 0:35 to play as Colorado State brought The Belt back to Fort Collins with a 27-20 win. The Falcons took a 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter when All-WAC QB Beau Morgan found WR Steve Hendricks on a 19-yard touchdown pass. The Rams tied the game in the 2nd quarter on a 28-yard touchdown pass from QB Daren Wilkinson to WR Paul Turner. Colorado State took the lead in the 3rd quarter when Watson scored the first of his two touchdowns finishing an 80-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run. Air Force knotted the game again with RB Jake Campbell pushing in from 3 yards for the 14-14 tie. The Rams’ second 80-yard scoring drive ended with Wilkinson & Turner connecting again, this time from 4 yards, for a 21-14 advantage. When Watson completed the Rams’ third consecutive 80-yard scoring drive with an 18-yard touchdown run, Colorado State had a 27-14 lead with 14:31 left in the game. The Falcons put together a 66-yard drive with Morgan scoring on a 10-yard run with 8:06 to play but the Rams still led 27-20 after the extra-point attempt was blocked. On the next play from scrimmage, Watson fumbled giving the Falcons a chance to tie the game. Air Force drove for the tying score but on 4th down Colorado State's All-WAC CB Ray Jackson, who earlier blocked a field goal attempt & an extra-point attempt, knocked down Morgan’s pass at the goal line. The final Falcons’ drive ended when Myers interception came at the Rams’ 10-yard line. Wilkinson finished with 241 yards passing with 2 touchdowns but an interception while Turner added 6 catches for 107 yards to his 2 scores. Morgan finished with just 85 yards passing but 126 yards rushing with his touchdown while running the Falcons' triple-option offense. The win gave the Rams their second Belt reign & first since 1994. The Falcons finished the season 8-5; WAC Co-Champs while the Rams finished 8-4 & WAC Co-Champs. Air Force has not played for The Belt again.
