The 2-2 Brigham Young Cougars of Lavell Edwards traveled to Tempe to meet the 2-4 Arizona State Sun Devils of coach Bruce Snyder.  Sun Devils’ All-Pac 10 QB Jake Plummer threw two touchdowns to match the two thrown by Brigham Young's QB Steve Sarkisian but a 4th quarter interception & touchdown return by Sun Devils’ LB Scott Von Der Ahe with just 0:48 to play secured a 29-21 Arizona State victory as the Sun Devils claimed their 4th Belt reign & first since 1993.  The Cougars took a 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter when RB Mark Atuaia broke loose for a 51-yard touchdown run.  Plummer then connected for touchdowns from 2 yards with WR Lenzie Jackson & from 1 yard with TE Steve Bush as the Sun Devils took a 13-7 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.  Brigham Young took a 14-13 lead to the halftime after Sarkisian found All-WAC TE Chad Lewis for a 7-yard touchdown pass.  In the 3rd quarter, Sarkisian hit WR Mike Johnston for a 23-yard touchdown pass giving the Cougars a 21-13 edge.  Early in the 4th quarter, Arizona State's RB Ryan Wood scored on a 1-yard touchdown run as the Sun Devils closed to 21-19 with the failed 2-point conversion.  When Arizona State's PK Robert Nycz hit a 20-yard field goal with 5:27 left, the Sun Devils took a 22-21 lead.  The teams exchanged punts before the Cougars started a drive at their 20-yard line with 0:59 to play.  On the first snap, Von Der Ahe picked-off Sarkisian & ran untouched into the end zone for the touchdown.  Brigham Young drove to the Arizona State 22-yard line but could get no closer before time expired giving the Sun Devils the win.  Plummer completed 22 of 28 passes for 177 yards with 2 touchdowns while Sarkisian finished with 282 yards passing with 2 touchdowns but 2 interceptions.  The Cougars finished the season 7-4; WAC Co-Champs while the Sun Devils finished 6-5.  Brigham Young would play for The Belt again in 1996.
