The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets of coach Bill Lewis hosted the 7th ranked Arizona Wildcats of coach Dick Tomey. Arizona’s “Desert Swarm” defense held Georgia Tech to 20 yards rushing, recorded 4 sacks & recovered a fumble to overcome 5 Wildcats’ turnovers but it took a 6-yard touchdown run from Arizona RB Kevin Schmidtke with 0:29 to play to retain The Belt in a 19-14 come from behind win over the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech took the lead in the 1st quarter when QB Tommy Luginbill found RB Derrick Steagall on a 14-yard touchdown pass giving the Yellow Jackets a 7-0 lead. Arizona’s All-American PK Steve McLaughlin hit a 30-yard field goal to get the Wildcats on the board & when QB Dan White dove in from one yard, Arizona had a 10-7 lead that they held to halftime. McLaughlin’s 29-yard field goal accounted for the only points of the 3rd quarter. When Luginbill found WR Charlie Simmons on a 22-yard touchdown pass, Georgia Tech regained the lead at 14-13 with 10:56 to play. As the clock ran down, the Wildcats plan was to set-up for the winning field goal but Schmidtke run made that a moot point. Arizona’s All-Pac 10 RB Ontiwaun Carter finished with 151 yards rushing while Luginbill threw for 164 yards with his 2 touchdowns for Georgia Tech. Arizona finished the season 8-4; ranked 20th nationally while the Yellow Jackets finished 1-10 in Lewis’ final season. Georgia Tech would play for The Belt again in 2000.

The 1-0-1 Stanford Cardinal of coach Bill Walsh welcomed the 7th ranked, 2-0 Arizona Wildcats of coach Dick Tomey. Walsh wrote a book titled “Rough Magic” in which he said the Wildcats’ players were “mercenaries” since so few of them were from Arizona & after games you would like to “hose them down.” Walsh said he had been joking but the joke was on the Cardinal as All-Pac 10 RB Ontiwaun Carter rushed for 2 touchdowns while the Arizona defense held Stanford to just 6 yards rushing in a 34-10 victory to retain The Belt. Cardinal WR Leroy Pruitt fumbled on a punt return at the Stanford 14-yard line & the Wildcats capitalized three plays later with Carter scoring from 10 yards for a 7-0 lead. Arizona’s next drive went 78 yards with QB Dan White connecting with WR Richard Dice on a 14-yard touchdown pass for the 14-0 lead through the 1st quarter. After blocking a Stanford field goal, the Wildcats got a 3-yard touchdown run from Carter for a 21-0 lead with 11:18 left in the 1st half. A 31-yard field goal by All-American PK Steve McLaughlin made it 24-0 before Stanford finally scored on a 3-yard touchdown pass from QB Steve Stenstrom to TE Tony Cline but the Cardinal still trailed 24-7 at the half. The Cardinal accounted for the only points of the 3rd quarter with a 42-yard field goal by PK Eric Abrams. McLaughlin hit on a 53-yard field goal before Arizona All-American S Tony Bouie finished the scoring by returning a Stenstrom interception 49 yards for a touchdown. White finished with 200 yards passing with his touchdown. Stenstrom threw for 295 yards with a touchdown but 2 interceptions, WR Brian Manning had 7 catches for 131 yards but All-Pac 10 WR Justin Armour was held to 4 catches for 59 yards for Stanford. Arizona finished the season 8-4; ranked 20th nationally while the Cardinal finished 3-7-1 in Walsh’s final season. Stanford would play for The Belt again in 2004.

The 3-6 New Mexico Lobos of coach Dennis Franchione hosted the 9th ranked, 8-0 Utah Utes & coach Ron McBride. New Mexico shutout the Utes in the 2nd half after giving up 305 yards & 21 points in the 1st half. It seemed early that Utah would extend their unbeaten streak when QB Mike McCoy found WR Kevin Dyson for a 56-yard touchdown pass & RB Charlie Brown scored on an 8-yard touchdown run giving the Utes a 14-0 1st quarter lead. New Mexico got on the board when Vail hit from 45 yards but Brown’s second touchdown down came from 12 yards & Utah extended the lead to 21-3. New Mexico RB Eric Young score on a 5-yard touchdown run & the Lobos closed to 21-11 at the half with the successful 2-point conversion. Vail’s 22-yard field goal accounted for the only points of the 3rd quarter but New Mexico still trailed 21-14. It looked like the Lobos had tied the game when All-WAC QB Stoney Case found WR Roy White for a 2-yard touchdown pass but the missed extra-point attempt left the New Mexico trailing 21-20. With 3:10 left to play, the Lobos faced a 4th & 3 from their own 27-yard line. Instead of punting, Coach Franchione chose to try a pass & Case found WR Gavin Pearlman open at the New Mexico 35-yard line. Pearlman broke a tackle before racing 56 yards to the Utah 17-yard line before being brought down & setting up Vail’s field goal with just seconds left that sealed the upset. Case finished with 240 yards passing with a touchdown while Pearlman added 5 catches for 123 yards to his score. For Utah, McCoy threw for 314 yards with a touchdown but 2 interceptions while Brown added 103 yards on the ground to his 2 scores.
