The 3-6 New Mexico Lobos of coach Dennis Franchione hosted the 9th ranked, 8-0 Utah Utes & coach Ron McBride.  New Mexico's PK Nathan Vail connected on 3 field goals as the Lobos upset the Utes to claim their first Belt reign with a 23-21 victory.  New Mexico shutout the Utes in the 2nd half after giving up 305 yards & 21 points in the 1st half.  It seemed early that Utah would extend their unbeaten streak when QB Mike McCoy found WR Kevin Dyson for a 56-yard touchdown pass & RB Charlie Brown scored on an 8-yard touchdown run giving the Utes a 14-0 1st quarter lead. New Mexico got on the board when Vail hit a field goal from 45 yards but Brown’s second touchdown down came from 12 yards & Utah extended the lead to 21-3.  New Mexico's RB Eric Young score on a 5-yard touchdown run &, with the successful 2-point conversion, the Lobos closed to 21-11 at the half.  Vail’s 22-yard field goal accounted for the only points of the 3rd quarter but New Mexico still trailed 21-14.  It looked like the Lobos had tied the game when All-WAC QB Stoney Case found WR Roy White for a 2-yard touchdown pass but the missed extra-point attempt left New Mexico trailing 21-20.  With 3:10 left to play, the Lobos faced a 4th & 3 from their own 27-yard line.  Instead of punting, Coach Franchione chose to try a pass allowing Case to find WR Gavin Pearlman open at the 35-yard line.  Pearlman broke a tackle before racing 56 yards to the Utah 17-yard line & setting up Vail’s field goal with just seconds left that sealed the upset.  Case finished with 240 yards passing with a touchdown while Pearlman added 5 catches for 123 yards to his score.  For Utah, McCoy threw for 314 yards with a touchdown but 2 interceptions while Brown added 103 yards on the ground to his 2 scores.  The Utes finished the season 10-2; ranked 10th nationally while the Lobos finished 5-7.  Utah would play for The Belt again in 1996.
