The 4-6 Wyoming Cowboys of coach Joe Tiller welcomed the 4-6 New Mexico Lobos of coach Dennis Franchione.  Wyoming's QB John Gustin threw for 427 yards with a touchdown & All-WAC RB Ryan Christopherson rushed for 129 yards with 2 touchdowns as the Cowboys claimed The Belt for the first time with a 38-28 win.  Wyoming's PK Cory Wedel gave the Cowboys the lead with a 25-yard field goal in the 1st quarter but New Mexico rebounded with a 9-play, 80-drive finished by RB Winslow Oliver’s 1-yard touchdown run giving the Lobos a 7-3 lead.  In the 2nd quarter, the Cowboys put together their own 80-yard scoring drive with Christopherson pushing in from 1 yard.  On the extra-point attempt All-WAC P Brian Gragert, who was holding for the kick, bobbled the snap but was able to throw to TE Jeremy Gilstrap for the 2-point conversion & an 11-7 lead.  New Mexico's PK Nathan Vail connected on a 50-yard field goal as the Lobos closed to 11-10 but Wyoming came right back with another 80-yard scoring drive finished by RB Terry Hendricks scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run giving the Cowboys an 18-10 lead at the half.  Vail’s 37-yard field goal midway through the 3rd quarter kept the Lobos close at 18-13 & after forcing a punt, New Mexico went 73 yards in 4 plays with All-WAC QB Stoney Case scoring on a 25-yard touchdown run.  When Case hit WR Gavin Pearlman for the 2-point conversion, New Mexico had a 21-18 lead.  Again, Wyoming responded with a 10-play, 80-yard drive with Hendricks scoring his second touchdown on a 17-yard run but the mishandled snap on the extra-point attempt left the score Wyoming 24 New Mexico 21 as the quarter ended.  The Lobos took back the lead when RB Eric Young scored on a 2-yard touchdown run for the 28-24 lead with 12:23 to play.  Six plays later, Wyoming went back on top with Christopherson scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run.  The short touchdown was set-up by Gustin’s 31-yard pass to WR Brent Tillman followed by a 23-yard completion to All-WAC WR Marcus Harris.  The clinching score came when Gustin connected with Harris for a 63-yard touchdown pass with 3:31 to play & New Mexico could not respond.  Harris finished with 8 catches for 167 yards with his touchdown while Tillman added 8 catches for 140 yards.  Case finished with 248 yards passing for New Mexico.  The Lobos finished the season 5-7 while the Cowboys finished 6-6.  New Mexico has not played for The Belt again.
