The 0-1 New Mexico State Aggies of coach Jim Hess traveled to Tucson to meet the 9th ranked, 1-0 Arizona Wildcats of coach Dick Tomey.  Arizona’s All-Pac 10 RB Ontiwaun Carter rushed for 149 yards with 2 touchdowns & WR Richard Dice added 150 yards receiving with 2 touchdowns as the Wildcats routed the Aggies 44-0 to retain The Belt.  Arizona scored on their first possession with QB Dan White finding Dice for a 57-yard touchdown pass.  Carter pushed the lead to 14-0 with a 5-yard touchdown run & All-American PK Steve McLaughlin’s 50-yard field goal made it 17-0.  Carter scored again on a 7-yard touchdown run & Dice caught a 38-yard touchdown pass with 0:21 left in the half giving the Wildcats a 31-0 lead.  New Mexico State’s only scoring threat in the 1st half came up short when PK Bubba Culin missed a 47-yard field goal attempt.  McLaughlin hit field goals of 44 & 39 yards in the 3rd quarter & RB Gary Taylor scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter to finish the scoring.  The Aggies again threatened to score on their final possession getting to the Arizona 6-yard line before QB Cody Ledbetter’s fourth down pass was broken up in the end zone.  New Mexico State crossed midfield only twice in each half while Arizona held the ball for 37:48 of the game.  White finished with 198 yards passing with 2 touchdowns while Ledbetter threw for 148 yards & All-Big West WR Lucious Davis added 5 catches for 97 yards for the Aggies.  Arizona finished the season 8-4; ranked 20th nationally while the Aggies finished 3-8.  New Mexico State has not played for The Belt again.
