The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets of coach Bill Lewis hosted the 7th ranked Arizona Wildcats of coach Dick Tomey.  Arizona’s “Desert Swarm” defense held Georgia Tech to 20 yards rushing, recorded four sacks & recovered a fumble to overcome five Wildcats’ turnovers.  A 6-yard touchdown run from Arizona's RB Kevin Schmidtke with 0:29 to play to helped the Wildcats retain The Belt in a 19-14 come from behind win over the Yellow Jackets.  Georgia Tech took the lead just 45 seconds into the opening quarter when they recovered a fumble by Arizona's All-Pac 10 RB Ontiwaun Carter & Yellow Jackets' QB Tommy Luginbill found RB Derrick Steagall on a 14-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead.  Arizona’s All-American PK Steve McLaughlin hit a 30-yard field goal to get the Wildcats on the board & when QB Dan White dove in from one yard, Arizona had a 10-7 lead that they held at halftime.  McLaughlin’s 29-yard field goal accounted for the only points of the 3rd quarter.  When Luginbill found WR Charlie Simmons on a 22-yard touchdown pass, Georgia Tech regained the lead at 14-13 with 10:56 to play.  It looked as if the Wildcats would take the lead as McLaughlin lined-up for a shift field goal attempt with 7:14 to play but Yellow Jackets' DT Elliott Fortune blocked the attempt to preserve the lead.  Arizona finally got the lead back as Schmidtke's carry finished a 60-yard drive to secure the win.  Carter finished with 151 yards rushing but 3 fumbles while QB Dan White threw for 117 yards with 2 interceptions.  Luginbill threw for 164 yards with his 2 touchdowns for Georgia Tech in the loss.  Arizona finished the season 8-4; ranked 20th nationally while the Yellow Jackets finished 1-10 in Lewis’ final season.  Georgia Tech would play for The Belt again in 2000.
