The Texas Tech Red Raiders of coach Spike Dykes hosted the 15th ranked Oklahoma Sooners of coach Gary Gibbs in both teams’ 1992 opener.  Oklahoma QB Cale Gundy threw for 341 yards with 2 touchdowns & rushed for another score leading the Sooners to a 34-9 victory to claim their first Belt championship.  Oklahoma RB Earnest Williams scored on a 4-yard touchdown run & Texas Tech QB Robert Hall scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the 1st quarter before Gundy took over.  Gundy connected with RB Kenyon Rasheed on a 7-yard touchdown pass but the extra-point attempt was blocked & returned by Red Raiders’ LB Ben Kirkpatrick for 2 points making the score Oklahoma 13 Texas Tech 9.  Gundy then connected with Williams for a 13-yard touchdown pass as Oklahoma took a 20-9 lead at halftime.  Neither team scored in the 3rd quarter & Gundy took it in himself on a 1-yard touchdown run to effective seal the win.  Oklahoma LB Aubrey Beavers capped the scoring when he returned an interception from Hall 5 yards for a touchdown.  The 341 yards Gundy passed for set an Oklahoma school record for yardage in a single game.  Texas Tech RB Byron Morris rushed for 103 yards in the losing effort.  The Red Raiders finished the season 5-6 while the Sooners finished 5-4-2.  Texas Tech would play for The Belt again in 1997.

First-year coach Ray Perkins brought his 0-1 Arkansas State Indians, in their first season as a Division 1-A program, to Norman to meet the 13th ranked, 1-0 Oklahoma Sooners of coach Gary Gibbs.  Perkins had coached in the NFL & at Alabama but the jump from Division 1-AA to Division 1-A is never an easy one & this game was no exception.  Oklahoma RB Earnest Williams rushed for 116 yards on just 11 carries including a 60-yard touchdown run as the Sooners dominated the Indians 61-0.  Oklahoma QB Cale Gundy scored on a 1-yard touchdown run & Williams broke loose for his long score as the Sooners took a 14-0 1st quarter lead.  The 2nd quarter was more of the same for Oklahoma as RB Dewell Brewer scored on a 4-yard touchdown run & Gundy found WR Albert Hall for a 9-yard touchdown pass.  All-Big Eight CB Darnell Walker returned an interception from Arkansas State QB Johnny Covington 54-yards for another score while John Anderson blocked an Indian punt that resulted in a safety.  Oklahoma PK Scott Blanton scored the last points of the 2nd quarter with a 23-yard field goal for the 40-0 halftime lead.  Brewer’s second score of the game came on a 12-yard touchdown run for the only points of the 3rd quarter.  RB Dwayne Chandler scored on runs of 1 & 4 yards to cap the scoring for the Sooners.  The Indians were held to 30 yards rushing & 43 yards passing as the Sooners dominated every phase of the game.  Oklahoma finished the season 5-4-2 while the Indians finished 2-9 in Perkins only season.  Arkansas State has not played for The Belt again.

The 0-0-1 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Larry Smith traveled to Norman to meet the 13th ranked, 2-0 Oklahoma Sooners of coach Gary Gibbs.  The Trojans featured All-American OT Tony Boselli as well as All-Pac 10 LB Willie McGinest & All-Pac 10 WR Curtis Conway but the Trojans were in the midst of a 7-game winless streak.  Southern Cal scored 20 points in the final 14:00 of the game to claim a 20-10 upset win.  The Trojans’ defense held Oklahoma to just 48 yards rushing & intercepted Sooner QB Cale Gundy twice to keep game close until Southern Cal’s offense erupted in the final quarter.  Both defenses dominated the 1st half but Oklahoma PK Scott Blanton hit a 42-yard field goal for a 3-0 Sooner lead.  Oklahoma CB Terry Collier intercepted Southern Cal QB Rob Johnson & returned it to the Southern Cal 28-yard line.  Three plays later, Gundy connected with WR Corey Warren on a 25-yard touchdown pass for a 10-0 lead.  The Trojans finally got the offense moving in the 4th quarter.  After Conway returned a punt 17 yards to the Southern Cal 49-yard line, Johnson found him running free down the left sideline for a 51-yard touchdown pass.  With 10:17 to play, Sooner RB Kenyon Rasheed fumbled & Southern Cal S Stephon Pace recovered the ball, carrying it 19 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.  Pace intercepted Gundy midway through the 4th quarter & Southern Cal drove 43 yards with back-up QB Reggie Williams scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run for the final Southern Cal score.  Johnson finished with 201 yards passing with a touchdown while Conway added 9 catches for 115 yards to his score.  Gundy threw for 153 yards with a touchdown but the 2 interceptions ended the Sooners hopes.  The win marked Southern Cal’s 8th Belt reign & first since 1990.  The Sooners finished the season 5-4-2 while the Trojans finished 6-5-1 in Smith’s final season.  Oklahoma would play for The Belt again in 1996.

The 20th ranked, 1-0-1 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Larry Smith traveled to Seattle to meet the top-ranked, 3-0 Washington Huskies of coach Don James.  Huskies’ QB Billy Joe Hobert threw for 2 touchdowns & the defense held the Trojans to 89 yards rushing in a 17-10 win.  On the first play from scrimmage, Washington S Shane Pahukoa intercepted Southern Cal QB Rob Johnson & returned it to the Southern Cal 1-yard line.  Hobert then connected with RB Matt Jones on a 1-yard touchdown pass for the 7-0 lead just 0:19 into the game.  All-Pac 10 WR Curtis Conway fumbled on the next Southern Cal drive & Husky All-Pac 10 LB Dave Hoffmann recovered the ball at the Washington 32-yard line.  Hobert directed the 8-play, 68-yard drive hitting WR Joe Kralik on an 18-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 14-0.  A 40-yard pass from Johnson to WR Travis Hannah set-up a 27-yard field goal by PK Cole Ford as the Trojans closed to 14-3 but Johnson was knocked unconscious on the next Southern Cal drive & did not play the rest of the game.  Back-up QB Reggie Perry connected with Conway for a 53-yard touchdown pass late in the 1st half as Southern Cal closed to a 14-10 score.  Washington PK Travis Hanson hit a 40-yard field goal were the only points of the 2nd half.  Perry was unable to move the Southern Cal offense consistently & Smith turned to freshman QB Kyle Wachholtz to spark the offense midway through the 4th quarter.  With just 5:10 to play, Wachholtz led a drive to the Washington 28-yard line but his first-down pass with less than 2:00 to play was intercepted by Washington CB Walter Bailey to seal the Husky win.  Hobert finished with 111 yards passing with his 2 touchdowns while Southern Cal RB Estrus Crayton rushed for 105 yards & Conway added 5 catches for 112 yards with his touchdown in the losing effort.  The win gave the Huskies The Belt for the 8th time & first time since 1990.  The Trojans finished 6-5-1 in Smith’s final season while the Huskies finished 9-3, Pac 10 Co-Champs, & ranked 11th nationally.  Southern Cal would play for The Belt again in 6 weeks.

The 24th ranked, 3-1 California Golden Bears of first-year coach Keith Gilbertson met the top-ranked, 4-0 Washington Huskies of coach Don James.  All-American WR Sean Dawkins as well as All-Pac 10 performers DT Chidi Ahanotu & OT Todd Steussie led the Golden Bears.  Washington All-Pac 10 RB Napoleon Kaufman rushed for 208 yards with 2 touchdowns & the Huskies scored 21 points in the 3rd quarter to secure a 35-16 win.  Kaufman scored on a 36-yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter.  The Golden Bears tied the score before half when QB Dave Barr connected with WR Damien Semien on a 13-yard touchdown pass.  The Huskies had alternated quarterbacks all season with QB Billy Joe Hobert usually starting & QB Mark Brunell seeing plenty of playing time.  Brunell took over in the 3rd quarter & took the Huskies 64 yards in 8 plays with RB Matt Jones scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run for the 14-7 lead.  On the ensuing kick-off, Washington CB Russell Hairston recovered a fumble by California RB Lindsey Chapman in the end zone giving the Huskies a 21-7 advantage.  A 35-yard field goal by the Golden Bears’ PK Doug Brien made the score 21-10 but the Huskies added to their lead on Kaufman’s second touchdown – a 14-yard run making the score 28-10.  Barr hit Dawkins for a 16-yard touchdown to get within 12 points at 28-16 but when Washington RB Darius Turner scored on a 1-yard touchdown run, the Huskies had the game in hand.  Dawkins finished with 6 catches for 156 yards with his touchdown but 13 California penalties proved too much to overcome.  Washington finished the season 9-3; Pac 10 Co-Champs, ranked 11th nationally while the Golden Bears finished 4-7.  California would play for The Belt again in 1993.

The 9th ranked, 6-2-1 Arizona Wildcats of coach Dick Tomey came to Los Angeles to defend The Belt against the 18th ranked, 5-2-1 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Larry Smith.  Southern Cal had held The Belt earlier in the season after defeating Oklahoma but lost it to Washington the following week.  The Trojans’ defense held the Wildcats to just 68 yards rushing & forced 3 turnovers including 2 interceptions from S Jason Sehorn but it was a trick play that eventually spelled the difference in a 14-7 Southern Cal upset.  Both defenses dominated the game but late in the 2nd quarter, Southern Cal put together a 6-play, 75-yard drive capped by RB Estrus Crayton scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run.  The missed extra-point left the score Southern Cal 6 Arizona 0 at the half.  Arizona took the lead early in the 4th quarter when QB George Malauulu connected with WR Cary Taylor on a 41-yard touchdown pass for the 7-6 lead.  Midway though the quarter, Southern Cal WR Johnnie Morton found himself matched-up against Arizona LB Jamal Lee in man-to-man coverage.  Morton got behind Lee & Trojan QB Rob Johnson found him for a 65-yard gain to the Arizona 6-yard line.  Southern Cal PK Cole Ford had missed 2 field goals already & now the Trojans faced 3rd & goal from the 3-yard line against the nation’s 5th ranked defense.  Johnson pitched to RB Deon Strother who was running to his right.  Strother turned back & looked for Johnson in the end zone but Arizona CB Jey Phillips had stayed with the quarterback on the trick play.  The 6’4” Johnson out-jumped the 6’2” Phillips for the ball &, with the 2-point conversion, the Trojans had a 14-7 advantage.  The win gave the Trojans The Belt for the 9th time & first since earlier in 1992.  Johnson finished with 213 yards passing with his touchdown reception & Morton added 4 catches for 108 yards.  Malauulu threw for 213 yards but 2 interceptions for Arizona.  The Wildcats finished the season 6-5-1 while the Trojans finished 6-5-1 in Smith’s final season.  Arizona would play for The Belt again in 1993.

The 15th ranked, 6-2-1 Southern Cal Trojans met the 5-5 UCLA Bruins of coach Terry Donahue in the Victory Bell game.  Southern Cal Coach Larry Smith had won The Belt four times, once with Arizona & three times with the Trojans.  Amazingly, Smith had never coached a successful defense of The Belt.  UCLA QB John Barnes threw for 385 yards with 3 touchdowns & WR J.J. Stokes set a school record with 263 yards receiving but it took a defensive stand on a 2-point conversion with less than a minute to play for the Bruins to claim a 38-37 win.  Southern Cal took a 3-0 lead when PK Cole Ford hit a 36-yard field goal.  The Bruins took the lead when RB Kevin Williams scored on an 18-yard touchdown run.  When UCLA PK Louis Perez hit a 47-yard field goal, the Bruins had a 10-3 lead.  Southern Cal tied the game when QB Rob Johnson caught a pass from All-Pac 10 WR Curtis Conway for a 36-yard touchdown.  All this before the 2nd quarter had even started.  The Bruins got the lead back when Barnes hit Stokes for a 57-yard touchdown pass but the Trojans tied the game again when Johnson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run capping a 9-play, 67-yard drive.  Southern Cal seemed to take control of the game in the 3rd quarter when S Zuri Hector blocked a UCLA punt & LB Bruce Luzzi recovered the ball for a touchdown.  The Trojans pushed the lead to 14 points when RB Estrus Crayton scored on a 32-yard touchdown run for a 31-17 advantage.  Early in the 4th quarter, Barnes hit Stokes on a 29-yard touchdown pass & Williams scored his second touchdown on a 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 31-31.  With 3:08 to play, Barnes connected with Stokes for a 90-yard touchdown giving the Bruins a 38-31 lead.  QB Rob Johnson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run after an 11-play, 69-yard drive with 0:41 to play & Southern Cal decided to try for the win.  Johnson’s 2-point conversion pass was knocked down by LB Nkosi Littleton to preserve the UCLA upset.  The win marked the 8th time the Bruins had held The Belt & first since 1990.  Williams finished with 99 yards rushing with his 2 touchdowns for UCLA.  For Southern Cal, Johnson threw for 166 yards, rushed for 2 touchdowns, & caught another while Crayton added 140 yards rushing to his score.  The win by the Bruins meant that for the 2nd straight year & 3rd time ever, The Belt would not be defended in a Bowl game.  The Trojans finished 6-5-1 in Smith’s final season while the Bruins finished 6-5.  Southern Cal would play for The Belt again in 2004.
