The top-ranked, 8-0 Washington Huskies of coach Don James traveled to Tucson to meet the 12th ranked, 5-2-1 Arizona Wildcats of coach Dick Tomey.  The Wildcats “Desert Swarm” defense clamped down on Washington's offense holding them to 90 yards rushing while forcing 4 turnovers & Arizona's PK Steve McLaughlin hit 3 field goals in a 16-3 Wildcats' victory.  The only points of the first half came on a 34-yard field goal by McLaughlin.  Washington had a chance to tie or take the lead in the but TE Mark Bruener dropped a pass in the end zone when the field goal attempt was mishandled.  Arizona could have expanded the lead but QB George Malauulu fumbled at the Huskies' 5-yard line to end the scoring threat.  Washington tied the game in the 3rd quarter when PK Travis Hanson hit a 24-yard field goal.  McLaughlin added two more field goals (20 yards & 30 yards) in the 4th quarter for a 9-3 Arizona lead.  The second field goal followed a fumble by Huskies' QB Mark Brunell.  When Malauulu scored on a 1-yard touchdown run late in the game, the Wildcats had secured the upset.  Arizona's All-Pac 10 P Josh Miller pinned the Huskies down with his 47.3 average over 8 kicks.  Washington never started a drive beyond their own 31-yard line.  Malauulu completed just 5 of 12 pass attempts for 54 yards with his rushing touchdown & RB Billy Johnson added 99 yards rushing for Arizona.  Brunell finished with 243 yards passing with an interception & All-Pac 10 RB Napoleon Kaufman was held to 50 yards rushing while losing 2 fumbles.  The Huskies played without QB Billy Joe Hobert who was suspended pending investigation of $50,000 in loans he received.  The win gave the Wildcats their 3rd Belt reign & first since 1990.  The Huskies finished the season 9-3; Pac 10 Co-Champs, ranked 11th nationally while the Wildcats finished 6-5-1.  Washington would play for The Belt again in 1993.
