The 20th ranked, 1-0-1 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Larry Smith traveled to Seattle to meet the top-ranked, 3-0 Washington Huskies of coach Don James. Huskies’ QB Billy Joe Hobert threw 2 touchdown passes & the defense held the Trojans to 89 yards rushing in a 17-10 win. On the first play from scrimmage, Washington's S Shane Pahukoa intercepted Southern Cal's QB Rob Johnson & returned it to the Southern Cal 1-yard line. Hobert then connected with RB Matt Jones on a 1-yard touchdown pass for the 7-0 lead just 0:19 into the game. Trojans' All-Pac 10 WR Curtis Conway fumbled on the next Southern Cal drive & Huskies' All-Pac 10 LB Dave Hoffmann recovered the ball at the Washington 32-yard line. After Huskies' All-Pac 10 LB Dave Hoffman recovered a Trojans' fumble, Hobert directed the 8-play, 68-yard drive hitting WR Joe Kralik on an 18-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 14-0. A 40-yard pass from Johnson to WR Travis Hannah set-up a 27-yard field goal by PK Cole Ford as Southern Cal closed to 14-3 but Johnson was knocked unconscious on the next Trojans' drive & did not play the rest of the game. Southern Cal's back-up QB Reggie Perry connected with a tipped pass to Conway for a 53-yard touchdown late in the 1st half as the Trojans closed to a 14-10 score. Washington's PK Travis Hanson hit a 40-yard field goal for the only points of the 2nd half. Perry was unable to move the Southern Cal offense consistently & Smith turned to freshman QB Kyle Wachholtz to spark the offense midway through the 4th quarter. With just 5:10 to play, Wachholtz led a drive to the Washington 28-yard line but his first-down pass with 1:32 to play was intercepted by Washington's CB Walter Bailey to seal the Huskies' win. Hobert finished with 111 yards passing with his 2 touchdowns in the win. For Southern Cal, Perry threw for 136 yards with touchdown as well as an interception, RB Estrus Crayton rushed for 105 yards & Conway added 5 catches for 112 yards with his touchdown in the losing effort. The win gave the Huskies The Belt for the 8th time & first time since 1990. The Trojans finished 6-5-1 in Smith’s final season while the Huskies finished 9-3, Pac 10 Co-Champs, & ranked 11th nationally. Southern Cal would play for The Belt again in 6 weeks.
