The 0-0-1 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Larry Smith traveled to Norman to meet the 13th ranked, 2-0 Oklahoma Sooners of coach Gary Gibbs. The Trojans featured All-American OT Tony Boselli as well as All-Pac 10 LB Willie McGinest & All-Pac 10 WR Curtis Conway but the Trojans were in the midst of a 7-game winless streak. Southern Cal scored 20 points in the final 14:00 of the game to claim a 20-10 upset win. The Trojans’ defense held Oklahoma to just 48 yards rushing & intercepted Sooners' QB Cale Gundy twice to keep game close until Southern Cal’s offense erupted in the final quarter. Both defenses dominated the 1st half but Oklahoma's PK Scott Blanton hit a 42-yard field goal for a 3-0 Sooner lead. Oklahoma's CB Terry Collier intercepted Southern Cal's QB Rob Johnson & returned it to the Southern Cal 28-yard line. Three plays later, Gundy connected with WR Corey Warren on a 25-yard touchdown pass for a 10-0 lead. The Trojans finally got the offense moving in the 4th quarter. After Conway returned a punt 17 yards to the Southern Cal 49-yard line, Johnson found him running free down the left sideline for a 51-yard touchdown pass. With 10:17 to play, Sooners' RB Kenyon Rasheed fumbled & Southern Cal's S Stephon Pace recovered the ball, carrying it 19 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Pace intercepted Gundy midway through the 4th quarter & Southern Cal drove 43 yards with back-up QB Reggie Williams scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run for the final Southern Cal score. Johnson finished with 201 yards passing with a touchdown while Conway added 9 catches for 115 yards to his score. Gundy threw for 153 yards with a touchdown but the 2 interceptions ended the Sooners hopes. The win marked Southern Cal’s 8th Belt reign & first since 1990. The Sooners finished the season 5-4-2 while the Trojans finished 6-5-1 in Smith’s final season. Oklahoma would play for The Belt again in 1996.
