First-year coach Ray Perkins brought his 0-1 Arkansas State Indians, in their first season as a Division 1-A program, to Norman to meet the 13th ranked, 1-0 Oklahoma Sooners of coach Gary Gibbs. Perkins had coached in the NFL & at Alabama but the jump from Division 1-AA to Division 1-A is never an easy one & this game was no exception. Oklahoma's RB Earnest Williams rushed for 116 yards on just 11 carries including a 60-yard touchdown run as the Sooners dominated the Indians 61-0. Oklahoma's QB Cale Gundy scored on a 1-yard touchdown run & Williams broke loose for his long score as the Sooners took a 14-0 1st quarter lead. The 2nd quarter was more of the same for Oklahoma as RB Dewell Brewer scored on a 4-yard touchdown run & Gundy found WR Albert Hall for a 9-yard touchdown pass. Sooners' All-Big Eight CB Darnell Walker returned an interception from Arkansas State's QB Johnny Covington 54-yards for another score while John Anderson blocked an Indian punt that resulted in a safety. Oklahoma's PK Scott Blanton scored the last points of the 2nd quarter with a 23-yard field goal for the 40-0 halftime lead. Brewer’s second score of the game came on a 12-yard touchdown run for the only points of the 3rd quarter. Oklahoma's RB Dwayne Chandler scored on runs of 1 & 4 yards to cap the scoring for the Sooners. The Indians were held to 30 yards rushing & 43 yards passing as the Sooners dominated every phase of the game. Gundy completed 5 of his 8 pass attempts for 97 yards with a touchdown. Oklahoma finished the season 5-4-2 while the Indians finished 2-9 in Perkins only season. Arkansas State has not played for The Belt again.
