The 9th ranked, 6-2-1 Arizona Wildcats of coach Dick Tomey came to Los Angeles to defend The Belt against the 18th ranked, 5-2-1 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Larry Smith. Southern Cal had held The Belt earlier in the season after defeating Oklahoma but lost it to Washington the following week. The Trojans’ defense held the Wildcats to just 68 yards rushing & forced 3 turnovers including 2 interceptions from S Jason Sehorn but it was a trick play that eventually spelled the difference in a 14-7 Southern Cal upset. Both defenses dominated the game but late in the 2nd quarter, Southern Cal put together a 6-play, 75-yard drive capped by RB Estrus Crayton scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run. The extra-point attempt was bobbled by holder QB Corby Smith, the son of coach Smith, & left the score Southern Cal 6 Arizona 0 at the half. Arizona took the lead early in the 4th quarter when QB George Malauulu connected with WR Cary Taylor on a 41-yard touchdown pass for the 7-6 lead. Midway though the quarter, Southern Cal's WR Johnnie Morton found himself matched-up against Arizona's LB Jamal Lee in man-to-man coverage. Morton got behind Lee & Trojans' QB Rob Johnson found him for a 65-yard gain to the Arizona 6-yard line. Southern Cal's PK Cole Ford had missed 2 field goals already & now the Trojans faced 3rd & goal from the 3-yard line against the nation’s 5th ranked defense. Johnson pitched to RB Deon Strother who was running to his right. Strother turned back & looked for Johnson in the end zone but Arizona's CB Jey Phillips had stayed with the quarterback on the trick play. The 6’4” Johnson out-jumped the 6’2” Phillips for the ball &, with the 2-point conversion, the Trojans had a 14-7 advantage. The win gave the Trojans The Belt for the 9th time & first since earlier in 1992. Johnson finished with 213 yards passing with his touchdown reception & Morton added 4 catches for 108 yards. Malauulu threw for 213 yards but 2 interceptions for Arizona. The Wildcats finished the season 6-5-1 while the Trojans finished 6-5-1 in Smith’s final season. Arizona would play for The Belt again in 1993.
