The Colorado Buffaloes of coach Bill McCartney made their first Belt defense against the 0-1 Wyoming Cowboys of first-year coach Joe Tiller. With All-American C Jay Leeuwenburg blocking, QB Darian Hagan threw for a touchdown & rushed for another leading the Buffaloes to a 30-13 victory. Hagan score in the 1st quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run & PK Jim Harper hit a 40-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead at the end of the quarter. The Cowboys got the only points of the 2nd quarter on a 46-yard field goal from PK Sean Fleming for a 10-3 Colorado halftime lead. Wyoming tied the game in the 3rd quarter when QB Tom Corontzos hit WR Ryan Yarborough for a 19-yard touchdown pass. Colorado reclaimed the lead when RB James Hill scored on a 1-yard touchdown run for a 16-10 Buffalo lead. Fleming hit a field goal from 42 yards as Wyoming closed to within 16-13 at the start of the 4th quarter. Colorado controlled the final stanza, scoring on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Hagan to WR Mark Henry & on a 5-yard touchdown run by RB Kent Kahl. Both scores were set-up when Hagen returned punts 37 & 30 yards. This was the first time in his college career he had handled punt return duties. Hagan finished with 151 yards passing while Corontzos threw for 198 yards with an interception for the Cowboys. Colorado finished the season 8-3-1; Big Eight Co-Champs, ranked 20th nationally while the Cowboys finished 4-6-1. Wyoming would play for The Belt again in 1994.
