The 22nd ranked, 5-2 Baylor Bears of coach Grant Teaff had held The Belt two weeks earlier but dropped it to Rice. Baylor may have been looking forward to their match-up with Texas A&M the following week when they fell to Rice. The 5-1 Texas Christian Horned Frog of coach Jim Wacker planned to make sure the Bears didn’t get it back. Baylor turned three 1st half fumbles by Texas Christian into 17 points & the Bears’ defense held the Horn Frogs to just 35 yards rushing as they claimed their second Belt championship reign with a 26-9 victory. Baylor took a 3-0 lead in the 1st quarter when PK Jeff Ireland hit a 38-yard field goal. After the Bears intercepted Texas Christian's QB Tim Schade at the Baylor 1-yard line, the Horned Frogs’ DE Tunji Bolden tackled Baylor's QB J.J. Joe in the end zone for a safety. Baylor scored twice in the 2nd quarter after recovering Texas Christian fumbles. Joe scored on a 1-yard touchdown run & RB John Henry scored on a 2-yard touchdown run as the Bears took a 17-2 halftime lead. Ireland scored the only points of the 3rd quarter when he connected on a 35-yard field goal. Henry finished the Bears’ scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter. Texas Christian’s final points came on an 18-yard touchdown pass from QB Matt Vogler to WR Setrick Dickens. Joe finished with just 91 yards passing but the Bears held the ball for 37:20 of the game. Schade threw for 129 yards with an interception while Vogler threw for 145 yards with a touchdown & an interception in mop-up duty for the Horned Frogs. Texas Christian's All-American TE Kelly Blackwell added 9 catches for 154 yards in the loss. The Horned Frogs finished the season 7-4 while the Bears finished 8-4. Texas Christian would play for The Belt again in 1996.
