Coach Bob Stull brought his 1-0 Missouri Tigers to Waco to meet the 14th ranked, 2-0 Baylor Bears of coach Grant Teaff.  Baylor's QB J.J. Joe threw for 300 yards with a touchdown & rushed for another score as the Bears amassed 649 yards total offense to retain The Belt with a 47-21 thrashing of the Tigers.  The Bears were never challenged as they scored the first 34 points of the game.  Baylor's All-SWC RB David Mims scored on a 6-yard touchdown run & RB Creig Stephens added a 5-yard touchdown run as the Bears took a 14-0 1st quarter lead.  Baylor's RB Robert Strait scored on a 2-yard run to push the lead to 21-0 before PK Jeff Ireland kicked field goals from 36 & 29 yards giving the Bears a 27-0 halftime lead.  Baylor destroyed any hopes the Tigers had of a rally on the first drive of the 3rd quarter.  The Bears took just 4 plays & 0:48 to complete a 90-yard drive with the big play coming on a 75-yard touchdown pass from Joe to All-SWC WR Melvin Bonner.  Missouri got on the board midway through the 3rd quarter with a 6-play, 85-yard drive capped by RB Ronnell Kayhill’s 3-yard touchdown run.  Kayhill scored his second touchdown of the quarter on a 1-yard run finishing a 7-play 34-yard drive for the Tigers before Joe led a 6-play, 68-yard drive.  Joe’s 2-yard touchdown run left the score Baylor 41 Missouri 14 entering the 4th quarter.  Kayhill scored his third touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run to complete the Tigers’ scoring before Strait finished the Bears’ scoring with a 23-yard touchdown run midway through the final quarter.  Strait rushed for 126 yards with his 2 touchdowns while Bonner had 2 catches for 149 yards with his touchdown.  For the Tigers, QB Phil Johnson threw for 296 yards with 3 interceptions & TE Byron Chamberlain had 10 catches for 110 yards.  Baylor finished the season 8-4 while the Tigers finished 3-7-1.  Missouri would play for The Belt again in 1997.
